Job Summary

The Immunohematology Specialist will train transfusion Service staff, medical students, CLS trainees, Transfusion Service residents, and fellows on Immunohematology procedures. Assign workups and special testing, and to review antibody workups. Develop and evaluate new test procedures, products and equipment; make recommendations to Senior Supervisor. Assist in validation of new Transfusion Service automated instruments as per manufacturer's specification and the Transfusion Service quality plans. Assist with the purchase of all Transfusion Service reagents and instrument consumables. Maintain and ensure the Transfusion Service automated instruments are in good working order. Assist QA specialist on maintain vendor validation on all reagents and instrument consumables. Assist with the competency and technical proficiency evaluations of all Transfusion Service personnel to be compliant with all regulatory and accreditation guidelines (AABB, CAP, FDA, etc.) Assist in and ensure continued smooth operation of the Transfusion Service and provide adequate response to patient needs. Coordinate reference testing performed, review and post results, update billing. Assist with oversight of potential liver transplant patients with antibodies or special antigen negative requirements, assure RBCs are secured and available to support transplant. Perform additional duties, projects and/or special assignments.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $66.80 - $83.22 (Hourly Rate).

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor of Science degree
  • Three to five years of Blood Bank or Transfusion Service experience in a moderate to complex environment, with solid experience in Transfusion Service LIS application
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experienced with use of LIS in Transfusion Service, maintenance experience preferred
  • Experience troubleshooting computer hardware/software and/or equipment problems
  • Experience writing and/or revising SOPs, performing audit, data analysis
  • Solid experience with word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications
  • Experience bench teaching, including orientation and training of employee preferred
  • Demonstrate superior theoretical knowledge, technical judgment and skills, and the ability to work with a minimum of supervision
  • Assume responsibilities for keeping abreast of technical developments through current literature review
  • Evaluates new programs and/or procedures and makes recommendations, as requested by Transfusion Service Supervisor
  • Assumes limited supervisor responsibilities as assigned by Transfusion Service Supervisor

Preferred Qualifications


  • Previous experience in a high-volume laboratory doing clinical laboratory testing
  • Prefer experience with current automation and instrumentation used in a clinical laboratory
  • SBB certification preferred
  • Experienced with use of LIS in Transfusion Service, maintenance experience preferred
  • Experience bench teaching, including orientation and training of employee preferred
  • Five years of Transfusion Service experience in a moderate to high complexity environment, to include but not exclusive of, experience in:
    • Selection and crossmatch of blood for sensitized or problem recipient
    • Antibody identification and titers
    • Serological follow-up of transfusion reactions
    • Transfusion Service quality control procedures
    • Autoimmune hemolytic anemia
    • Prenatal testing requirements and antibody follow up
    • Problems associated with transplantation, e.g. serological CMV, etc.
    • Problems associated with transfusion of the fetus and neonate
    • Teaching, including orientation and training of new CLS and lab assistants as well as medical staff

License/Certification


  • California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license or limited license in Immunohematology
