Job Summary

Oversees staff to ensure proper procedures and policies are followed. Coordinates services with other patient care treatment personnel to assure proper patient care. Part of a multidisciplinary group including, but not limited to Physicists/dosimetrists/Radiation Oncologists/Chief RTTs to develop and revise evaluation and treatment standards to ensure compliance with organizational and regulatory agency standards.

Manages staff and operations to achieve department objectives; implements treatment strategies, standards, and workflows. Advises therapists and technical assistants on complex simulation and treatment protocols. Provides supportive and timely feedback to staff and reviews work performance.
Develops workflows and ensures compliance and consistency of clinical protocols. Collaborates within and across departments to resolve problems and coordinate patient care. Ensures compliance with internal policy and external regulations.
Provides input for short and long-range department goals. Participates in the development and implementation of operating procedures that improve quality and safety.
Assists with the development and administration of department budget. Reviews and reconciles financial reports and reports variances. Identifies and suggests ways to increase workflow efficiency and utilization of resources.
Oversees quality assurance of radiotherapy treatments and testing and monitoring of technology / equipment. Ensures compliance with internal policies and external regulations.
Participates in the selection process for new radiotherapy systems and equipment. Works with IT and Clinical Engineering to implement new or improved clinical systems and equipment establishing contingency plans for system downtime or outages.
Participates on inter-disciplinary committees and projects. Serves as a liaison with external partners and oversees vendor relationships.
Recommends changes in staffing, executes recruiting and onboarding, verifying new hires meet requirements. Oversees staff education, ensuring ongoing competency. Conducts performance evaluations and defines development goals. Updates job descriptions and career series to maintain accuracy.
Promotes professional growth and advancement for radiation therapy staff, implementing continuing education and training initiatives. Provides mentorship to emerging and new leaders to smooth the transition from clinical roles to formal leadership roles. Educates on the business side of healthcare, while maintaining the care side.
Develops a culture of teamwork and promotes effective interdepartmental collaborations. Promotes the exchange of ideas to continually improve treatment outcomes, patient safety, and operational excellence.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $124,400 - $291,600 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Radiation Oncology provides clinical care, supports the academic mission of UCSF and the School of Medicine, and conducts basic and clinical scientific research. Accountability for Department activities stretches across 4 clinical sites: Parnassus, Mt. Zion, UC Davis (proton ocular program) and Mission Bay. With a new 5th site opening in Berkely in the Winter of 2025

Radiation Oncology primarily serves cancer patients who range in age from infants to adults. The Department sees ~ 4,900 new patient consults per year and performs ~ 59,000 procedures annually. The Department clinical capital equipment includes 3 4D-CT simulators, 6 linear accelerators with IGRT for external beam therapy, 1 TomoTherapy HD, 1 GammaKnife (extensive multidisciplinary program including Neurosurgery), 1 Cyberknife (another multi-disciplinary program), 2 HDR (high dose radiation), 1 IntraBeam, 1 RT100 (skin cancer), 2 Mobetron IORT (Intra-Operative Radiation Therapy), and runs an active Hyperthermia program. In addition, brachytherapy (radioactive implants) is performed to treat a prostate cancer, gynecologic cancers, brain tumors and a number of other cancer bearing sites. RadOnc also manages an active ocular melanoma treatment program at UC Davis.

Required Qualifications


  • Graduate of an AMA, JCERT approved School of Radiation Therapy
  • RT(T) AART licensure
  • CSRT
  • Knowledge of Radiation treatment machines and its proper usage with no less than 3 years of experience as a Radiation Therapist in a hospital or outpatient center environment
  • Knowledge in clinical and business operations management and patient care services.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to create and maintain a climate for effective communication and collaborative decision making.
  • Knowledge of relevant healthcare information technology and patient care workflows and processes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as related legislative, accreditation, licensing and compliance environments.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's degree in related field
  • Strong leadership, fiscal and operations management skills
  • Proven ability to organize, manage multiple priorities, and delegate work functions efficiently.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging best practices and technologies in the clinic / center healthcare industry.
  • Knowledge of HR practices including recruitment and selection, performance management, coaching / counseling, initiating corrective action, and progressive discipline.

License/Certification


  • RT(T) AART licensure
  • CSRT
