Job Description

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Epic AVP for Revenue Cycle Systems has the responsibility for the optimal functioning and support of applications and systems utilized for hospital and professional billing, patient access and appointment scheduling, health information systems, document management, and other related solutions. This person plans, organizes, directs, and manages teams and tasks to achieve goals with budgeted funds and available personnel. Works with leadership to establish policies and ensure the department's goals and objectives are met through the planning and decision-making process. The AVP provides strong leadership and implements changes when necessary to ensure the systems support and implementation initiatives are meeting the goals of the organization. The AVP acts as an advocate and liaison between Revenue Cycle stakeholder groups across the organization and is accountable for the governance structure and is the central point of communication for all related activities. Drives portfolio and resource management adoption within the Information Services & Technology organization and collaborates across the organization to achieve success.

As an expert advisor and member of the Epic team, this person partners across the organization in the use of Epic software to improve access and revenue cycle processes. The AVP stays current on Epic functionality and the associated product roadmap, using this knowledge in thought leadership for best practices for the enterprise. Analyzes client needs, creates workflows, develop strategies tailored to the organization, and provides guidance throughout the scope of both ongoing support and new implementations for the Epic EMR and associated projects. Activities include coordinating and aligning the delivery of multiple projects, developing cost benefit analyses for the program, communicating to executive committee(s), creating and reporting program status utilizing a dashboard, allocating resources across the multiple projects, defining project governance policies and managing the financial concerns of the program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Oversight and leadership for the Access and Revenue Cycle Systems team.
  • Leads and assists in developing project business case and request for proposals/information (RFP/RFI).
  • Provides leadership and staff development to ensure highly functional teams, working at the top of their license.
  • Serve as a trusted IS&T partner to operational leaders and stakeholders.
  • Fosters an environment of excellence in customer service and satisfaction.
  • Ensures appropriate processes are identified and followed, specifically scope management, change management, communications, and risk management.
  • Ensures all stakeholders are well informed and knowledgeable of key issues, risks and resource requirements, budget and cost factors, and technical challenges.
  • Demonstrates leadership by identifying and mitigating tasks, conflict, and communication.
  • Escalates issues and risks to executive leadership, to ensure proper awareness and efficient resolution.
  • Successful planning and execution of a multi-year, multi-facility, enterprise-wide revenue cycle systems initiatives.
  • Ensures all outcomes and deliverables meet organizational goals, objectives and quality standards.
  • Primary contact for the Revenue Cycle technology portfolio and will coordinate projects and communications to all impacted stakeholders.

OTHER FUNCTIONS AND COMPETENCIES :

  • In depth knowledge of hospital and ambulatory patient access and revenue cycle operations in an Academic Medical Center, multi-facility, health system.
  • Understanding of health care industry service delivery processes, preferably in a multi-facility health system.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve highly complex technical, organizational and operational problems.
  • Significant competency in vendor management
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate, collaborate and consult effectively with all levels of the organization. Demonstrated success at building team relationships and partnerships across organizational lines
  • Demonstrated knowledge of outcomes management and process improvement methods
  • Demonstrated understanding of enterprise wide healthcare applications suite with a focus on revenue cycle applications is required; Epic experience is required.
  • Demonstrates thorough understanding of the technology required to: input, process, and transport information within a single facility and throughout the system.
  • General understanding technology infrastructure including; cloud computing, Windows-based servers, Unix-based servers, and endpoint virtualization.
  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge of application software environments, robotic process automation, and AI pertaining to Revenue cycle, HIM and Access workflows.
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining appropriate and effective project governance structures for large, complex organizations
  • Experienced in the full implementation of the enterprise-wide electronic medical record system (EPIC)
  • Exceptional leadership, organizational, and project management skills. Demonstrates application of advanced knowledge of Project Management Institute-based project management methodology.
  • Proven change agent and mentor
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office products including MS Project, Visio, Word, Excel and PowerPoint required; ability to use other on-premise or cloud-based project management, reporting and dishoarding tools

Must be self-motivated, well organized and have strong innovation and facilitation skills

EDUCATIONAL/TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

  • BA/BS in Computer Science, Business, or Healthcare Administration required; masters preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATION:

  • Current Epic certification in at least one revenue cycle application is strongly preferred.
  • ITIL Foundation certification is strongly preferred when present in environment.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • 10+ years successful experience in revenue cycle and patient access application support is required; additional 3+ years hospital or ambulatory revenue cycle operations is preferred.
  • 4+ years successful experience in strategic planning and execution, serving in a management role, working as a change agent and providing company-wide leadership. Management of multi-million dollar budget.
  • 5+ years experience in implementing information systems, revenue cycle initiatives and other programs, with progressive IT experience.
  • Experience in leading/managing all or a part of the revenue cycle components of at least one Epic implementation beginning to end.
