Job Description Summary

The Reporter/Host has proven experience in Radio Journalism and has proven themselves to excel at the craft of audio storytelling and reporting. They are responsible for delivering high-quality news content across multiple platforms, including broadcast and web with little to no training required. This role is well-versed in a beat or two and has cultivated sources across the 32-county coverage area. They have a proven track record as experts in a field. This role involves identifying, researching, and reporting on local events and issues within a beat, producing in-depth feature stories, and collaborating with editors and producers to ensure journalistic excellence. The Reporter/Host also engages with the community, develops multimedia storytelling, and edits the work of reporters and producers.

This position is part-time, 28.75 hours per week.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • News Coverage:
    • Identify, research, and report on local events, developments, and issues of interest around your beat(s) to the audience.
    • Generate story ideas and pitches that align with the station's editorial priorities.
    • Keep the News Director and editorial Director informed of any developments in your beat.
    • Work on three to four stories simultaneously.
  • Reporting:
    • Conduct interviews, gather information, and craft compelling news reports for broadcast during Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and hourly newscasts.
    • Ensure accuracy, balance, and fairness in reporting.
    • Produce in-depth feature stories and special reports that provide depth, context, and analysis on key topics and issues.
  • Multimedia Storytelling:
    • Utilize multimedia tools and platforms to enhance storytelling.
    • Incorporate audio recordings, photographs, and digital assets into news reports.
    • Engage the audience across multiple platforms, including social media.
  • Interviewing and Sourcing:
    • Cultivate relationships with sources, experts, and community members.
    • Gather insights, perspectives, and quotes for news stories.
    • Demonstrate strong interviewing skills and journalistic judgment.
  • Editing and Collaboration:
    • Collaborate with editors, producers, and colleagues to review and edit news scripts for clarity, accuracy, and style.
    • Incorporate feedback and suggestions to improve the quality of reporting.
    • May assist other reporters with source development and editing.
  • Community Engagement:
    • Engage with the community to solicit story ideas, gather feedback, and build relationships with sources, stakeholders, and listeners.
    • Represent the station professionally at public events and meetings.
  • Professional Development:
    • Stay informed about current events, trends, and best practices in journalism.
    • Participate in training, workshops, and networking opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge in the field.
  • Breaking News:
    • Use initiative and source development to originate breaking news and in-depth features.
    • Cover events/breaking news outside of the regular schedule as needed.

Other Functions:

  • Undertakes special projects and assignments as required.
  • Participate in station fundraising, both on and off the air.
  • Collaborates with other departments that support the Content Division.
  • Anchor newscasts or host on-air programs, as needed.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • A four-year degree or equivalent is required and at least two years of full-time professional experience in journalism or equivalent experience. Radio experience is preferred.
  • Must have experience in news gathering, writing, editing and radio and web production for short-form and long-form reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a live broadcast environment.
  • Displays knowledge of and adherence to high ethical and audio/work standards.
  • Possesses effective communication and interpersonal skills. Must have excellent grammar and spelling skills.
  • Must have excellent memory for details, be able to meet daily deadlines under pressure and deal effectively with simultaneous tasks.
  • Ability to travel, as required.
  • Valid driver's license with good driving record. Must be insurable.
  • Skills required also include online research, word processing, digital editing, basic photography, and operation of light office equipment. Must show experience in posting information to a content management system for website publishing and posting to social media sites.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Familiarity with public radio news programming.
  • Possesses broad knowledge of local and regional issues - and/or depth of knowledge in beat specialty.
  • A track record of network story contributions.
  • Ability to learn quickly and be flexible.
  • Ability to work well both independently and in a small group.
  • Ability to lift light equipment (approximately 5-10 pounds).
  • Ability to always present and display professional demeanor.
  • Ability to meet the requirements of the University's automobile insurance, including valid driver license.
