Job Summary:

Perform basic lab animal technician duties. The goal is to ensure the health and welfare of all animals in compliance with Federal and UW regulations.

Animal Research Technician-Entry: Incumbent will work with our training unit and experienced staff to learn the tasks to be performed, including but not limited to nonhuman primate handling and care techniques, utilizing standard safety practices and precautions, and recognizing nonhuman primate behavior considered symptomatic of an illness or injury. The incumbent will undergo extensive training to obtain proficiency in the care of nonhuman primates to perform these tasks under limited supervision.


Responsibilities:
Feeds animals and maintains animal quarters, records, and supplies to ensure compliance with animal care regulations and in support of research and instruction.

  • 50% Inventories, cleans, and maintains organization of animal holding spaces and supplies
  • 20% Assists with preparing food and formulas and feeds animals according to established schedules and specifications
  • 5% Inspects and reports equipment problems to ensure optimal and safe operation
  • 5% Maintains organization of and updates records related to research procedures
  • 20% Observes animal behavior, performs basic animal care, and reports concerns to the appropriate entities to contribute to the health and well-being of animals to support research and teaching

Qualifications:
- Strong observation skills, attention to detail, ability to learn rapidly & adapt quickly to changing situations, effective & positive communication, organizes work well.
- Well qualified candidates will have experience in a laboratory animal research facility, veterinary clinic or accredited zoo environment. This background is preferred, but willing to consider candidates comfortable around animals.


Work Schedule:

Full Time Position
7:00 AM - 3:30 PM, Weekdays, Weekends & Holidays

Part Time Position
7:00 AM - 3:30 PM, Weekends & Holidays


Work Type:

Full or Part Time: 50% - 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Salary:

The typical starting salary for this position is $17.00 per hour depending on qualifications and experience. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays and paid time off; competitive insurance and saving accounts; and retirement benefits.


Additional Information:

Employee must be comfortable working with nonhuman primates and with wearing various required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Must be TB negative.

Employee will be required to provide written documentation to University Health Services showing one of the following: 1) receipt of measles vaccination; 2) laboratory evidence of immunity to measles; or 3) laboratory confirmation of measles disease.

Individuals without the aforementioned documentation will need to have a measles titer within the first week of employment. Depending on the results of the blood test, may need to be immunized.

With or without accommodation an employee must be able to consistently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds, sometimes at shoulder level; must be able to stand, stoop, reach, bend, etc.

Weekend, evening, and holiday work is required.
