Job Summary

The Data and Software Manager will play a critical role in managing and advancing the data and software infrastructure for the Center for Biosignal Research (CBR) at UCSF. Under the guidance of the CBR Co-Directors and Scientific Program Manager, the incumbent will manage and optimize existing CBR databases, primarily consisting of continuous bedside monitoring data and electronic health record data, and lead the development of new clinical databases, which could include data from NIH-funded cohort studies, digital health registries, and wearable-device data. The position will involve data extractions from clinical IT systems, data cleaning and processing, as well as the development and management of clinical software pipelines created to analyze these complex data. This position offers the opportunity to leverage skills in database management and software engineering to advance CBR's overall mission of harnessing biosignals to improve biological understanding and transform patient care.

The Data and Software Manager will collaborate with clinical systems within the UCSF Health system to curate, share, integrate, and analyze data, while ensuring regulatory compliance. The position requires a strong knowledge of information systems and software best practices to identify, update, and maintain systems to facilitate this work. The incumbent will become the local domain expert and liaison for CBR data and software, which offers a unique opportunity to engage with cutting-edge research methods, innovative data analysis techniques, and large-scale medical systems, while directly contributing to impactful advancements in healthcare.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $105,000 - $164,600 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Division of Cardiology, in which the Center for Biosignal Research is based, is one of the largest clinical, research and training divisions of the Department of Medicine (DOM) at UCSF. Within the Division are sub-specialty sections for: Adult Congenital Heart Disease; Advanced Heart Failure, Transplant, and Pulmonary Hypertension; Cardiac Electrophysiology; Echocardiography and Cardiac Imaging; General Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology; and Prevention. The Division runs several clinical practices in multiple sites, conducts basic and clinical research, and educates medical students, residents, clinical fellows and postdoctoral scholars through ACGME as well as non-ACGME training programs. In addition, the Division has significant and complex financial and administrative relationships with the Department of Medicine (DOM) and the UCSF Medical Center, as well as large patient care programs in the sections noted above, large clinical, Federal, and privately supported research programs and six faculty laboratories. The Division has 70+ full-time faculty, 7 non-faculty academics, 36 clinical fellows, 6 post-doctoral research fellows, 10 WOS faculty, 2 MSP physicians and over 60 research support and administrative staff.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and 3 or more years of directly related work experience; and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Thorough knowledge of SQL and highly proficient with queries and data management in SQL databases; highly proficient in database principals and database management, information systems
  • Experience in one or more programming languages such as Python, Java, C++, etc.
  • Knowledge of robust software development practice, including experience with version control systems
  • Experience with high-performance computing (HPC) environments and data storage solutions
  • Understanding of server architecture, system administration, and data security best practices
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Strong organizational skills
  • Strong analytical and design skills, including the ability to abstract real-world processes and map them to information system requirements and data flow
  • Ability to prepare data models unassisted
  • Familiarity with logical data design and data mapping or data conversion
  • Familiarity with data quality and governance issues and requirements
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant rules and regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds. Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated service orientation skills
  • Demonstrated strong problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines
  • Ability to represent relevant information in abstract models. Critical thinking skills and attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's degree or higher in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Experience with software development in C++
  • Experience in complex higher education environments, serving academic, medical, and research and administrative functions of a large public university
  • Experience working with clinical data systems, including EHRs, clinical registries, and sensor data from wearables and medical devices
