Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Administrative Director, the Practice Manager will oversee clinic operations and will have primary responsibility for the supervision of administrative staff at UCSF's Berkeley Outpatient Center . He/She will also have shared oversight over patient support staff such as medical assistants, LVNs, etc. in coordination with the Nurse Manager and Administrative Director .

The Practice Manager will be responsible for supervising the operational, human resource, administrative and business functions of the UCSF Berkeley Outpatient Center. These functions include, but are not limited to, practice revenue management, billing systems and procedures, facilities and safety procedures, registration, new patient coordination, scheduling, medical records storage and maintenance, and insurance authorizations. He/She must have the ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks and work well with staff, patients and providers. A high degree of independence, initiative, assertiveness, and diplomacy are necessary in dealing with faculty, staff and patients in a complex environment. The Practice Manager will work on a regular basis with leadership in the departments of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery, Audiology, Orthopedic Surgery, Cardiology, Vascular Surgery, Women's Health- OB/GYN and Maternal Fetal Medicine, Pulmonary, Physical Therapy, Ophthalmology ,Neurosurgery, Urology, , and Sterile Processing.

Manages the operations of healthcare clinic(s) or center (s) to include fiscal, human resources, and practice management operations.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $120,900 - $189,000 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Berkeley Outpatient Center is a clinical site that offers Adult multi-specialty services in one shared location. The core specialties located at this site are departments of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery, Audiology, Orthopedic Surgery, Cardiology, Vascular Surgery, Women's Health- OB/GYN and Maternal Fetal Medicine, Pulmonary, Physical Therapy, Ophthalmology, Neurosurgery and Urology, The staff includes Patient Care/Practice Coordinators, Medical Assistants, Nurses (RNs & LVNs) and Sonographers.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent combination of experience / training.
  • 3-5 years overall experience in related field.
  • Clinic/Center management experience, with progressive expertise in practice management, scheduling, customer-service methods, incident reporting, regulatory compliance, accreditation requirements, and information technology.
  • Proven ability to organize, manage multiple priorities, and delegate work functions efficiently.
  • Demonstrated managerial skills and human resources management knowledge, including staff deployment, resource utilization, budgeting and financial management, quality improvement, and program planning and implementation.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills to convey complex information, instructions, and guidelines in a clear concise, and specific manner, and to influence and persuade all levels of staff.
  • Knowledge of relevant healthcare and clinic operations information technology, including billing systems and patient care workflows and processes.
  • Strong knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document human resources issues and performance, and to participate in decision-making on human resources matters.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate level of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's degree in related field
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as related legislative, accreditation, licensing, and compliance environments.
