Job Summary

Involved in the development of server / OS / desktop applications and services including researching, designing, developing specifications for designing, writing, modifying, testing, debugging, troubleshooting and maintaining source code. Also having direct or related involvement in designing related databases, user interfaces, integration to other systems / applications, content or multimedia processes. Work includes analysis and design of post-production processes, quality assurance, maintenance and documentation. Help build UCSF's Data Library, by architecting, building, and deploying an opensource database system designed to accommodate very large (petabytes), diverse biological data types. Build tools for biologists to store, analyze and interact with their data. Will focus on building software infrastructure for data pipelines (ETL), multi-modal data integration, data warehousing and analysis. Will also develop web applications for data modeling, browsing and visualization. The position is based out of and reports to UCSF's facility in San Francisco, CA.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $127,754 - $140,000 (Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's or foreign equivalent degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and at least five years of progressive, post baccalaureate experience as a programmer or developer.
  • Five years of advanced programming using any of the following server-side languages: Ruby, Python or Golang.
  • Five years of expertise in SQL and interacting with any of the following relational databases: MySQL or Postgres.
  • Five years of proficiency in automated software testing techniques, including writing and maintaining unit or integration tests.
  • Five years of basic dev-ops work, including working in Unix environments, bash scripting, and strong familiarity with Docker.
  • Five years of actively collaborating and communicating with data scientists, product managers, or stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into effective technical solutions.
  • Three years of experience building ETL/data pipelines.
  • Two years of experience data modeling, data integration, and data warehousing.
  • Experience with workflow engines, either Airflow or Argo Workflows.
  • Experience developing complex web applications, with a focus on backend development including building APIs and database schemas with web application frameworks such as Rails or Django
