Position Highlights |
The Financial Analyst, Principal is a critical member of the College of Medicine-Tucson's Finance Team. Their overall objective is to provide operational and financial management support to assigned Academic Departments and Centers. This position monitors budgets, produces financial reports, and manages the finances for assigned Department(s)/Center(s) and their respective faculty within the College. This position requires great attention to detail, the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, excellent communication skills and a working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles. Duties & Responsibilities |
- Manage financial operations and fiscal responsibilities for UA and UA Foundation accounts within assigned Department(s)/Center(s), ensuring accuracy, compliance, and alignment with financial policies and institutional guidelines. Oversee budget development, expense management, and financial reporting, ensuring timely and accurate tracking of all financial transactions related to departments' operations.
- Serve as the designated fiscal officer for UA and UA Foundation accounts, reviewing and approving financial transactions in UAccess Financials, including Purchasing Card (P-Card) transactions, Disbursement Vouchers, Travel Authorizations, Expense Reports, Salary Expense Transfers, capital asset chart of accounts, and workflow eDoc requests.
- Assist in the All-Funds Annual Budget process, providing financial analysis and supporting the Quarterly Forecasting process. Responsibilities include gathering internal salary data, projecting operational expenses, travel, capital equipment costs, and other financial planning tasks to ensure effective budget allocation.
- Prepare complex financial analyses and reporting for the Administrative Operations Manager. Identify key findings, risks and potential funding gaps for faculty and staff at risk of losing grant support, etc.
- Generate and review monthly and quarterly financial reports with Departmental/Center financial staff as well as Principal Investigators to ensure budget alignment.
- Review department-sponsored notices of awards and contracts, assessing financial terms and ensuring budget compliance with institutional policies while coordinating with lower-staff to operationalize financial aspects.
- Oversee effort distribution, position allocations, and salary expense transfers, including retroactive adjustments to the budget start date.
- Conduct monthly and quarterly payroll reconciliation and approve federal effort certifications biannually, ensuring proper review and approval across all relevant units.
- Initiate, manage, and close out sub-awards, oversee financial tracking, invoicing, and reconciliation to ensure alignment with the approved budget and monitor financial performance for timely payments.
- Serve as the designated finance liaison for concurrences and RPPRs, providing financial analysis, ensuring proper financial documentation, and collaborating with Sponsored Projects and external sponsors to ensure compliance and alignment with funding expectations.
- Support the Administrative Operations Manager in leading lower-level financial staff and students who provide operational and/or financial support to assigned departments and/or centers, ensuring daily activities are completed efficiently and departmental/institutional deadlines are met. Assist in their development and share knowledge of financial analysis and modeling techniques.
- Provide guidance and training to department/center faculty and staff on institutional processes, policies, and procedures.
- Manage daily communications, including reviewing and responding to emails and voicemails from administrative staff, research staff, Principal Investigators, accountants, other departments and departmental/center leadership.

Minimum Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
- Minimum of five (5) years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, or a related area with accounting course work.
- Progressively responsible and diverse accounting experience and course work, which includes at least one year professional accounting, in which a broad exposure to all areas of accounting and accounting principles, practices and procedures was acquired.
- At least two years of experience managing employees.
- At least four years of experience using Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word.
- At least four years of experience managing state, discretionary, sponsored and gift funds, which would include four years of experience using the University of Arizona's electronic information systems to assist in the management of these funds (UAccess Financials, UAccess Employee and UAccess Analytics).
- At least two years of experience working with federal awards and sponsor requirements including operationalizing grants, working with complicated funding plans due to grant activity, and working with cost share.
