Job Description

WGL - Environmental Specialist - Water

Washington Gas has an immediate opening for an Environment Specialist to develop, evaluate, implement, and continuously improve cost-effective programs and procedures to ensure company operations comply with regulatory and corporate environmental requirements. This position requires working out of the Springfield, VA office 3 days/week and requires on call responder program 24 hours/day, 7 days/week on a rotating basis.

You Will:

  • Determines environmental compliance requirements and best management practices in assigned program responsibility areas (may include participation in waste, water, construction, hazardous materials, and/or air programs), obtains and maintains permits, performs regulatory analysis, develops technical documentation, files government reports, and maintains compliance records.

  • Performs support to multiple projects of small to medium scope of various durations with simple to moderate technical complexity in the range of $500,000 to $1,000,000.

  • Interacts with and supports business units with development of efficient compliance programs to ensure environmental requirements are met and implemented correctly.

  • Reviews and provides environmental support to construction projects, including erosion and sediment control plans, wetland delineations, permitting, and technical solutions to proactively manage environmental matters.

  • Provides support, guidance and direction to managers, supervisors, and other professionals to ensure corporate compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

  • Training and Coaching: Provides field-level training, toolbox talks, and on-the-job coaching to enhance worker understanding of EHSS principles and compliance requirements. Reinforce safe behaviors and practices.

  • Oversees environmental consultants, reviews, and revises progress reports by deadlines, supports development of budget and payment of expenses, and works closely with regulators on compliance requirements.

  • Supports the management of environmental investigations, sampling, remediation, monitoring requirements at our facilities, and leads compliance audits.

  • Supports development of company documents related to environmental compliance procedures and creates written compliance summary for each program area including corporate strategy, regulatory drivers, and ongoing requirements, etc.

  • Supports the development and maintenance of project metrics for project tracking/analysis and prepares/ delivers reports to all levels of management and stakeholders to measure and explain environmental performance results.

  • Determines and maintains computer system/program requirements to optimize data collection and reporting.

  • Negotiates permits and agreements related to Washington Gas compliance issues with regulators.

  • Writes RFPs, evaluates bids, and manages work of contractors as needed.

  • Assists with maintaining Environmental Dept. records, performing research tasks, data mining, and statistical analysis. Develops and maintains databases using MS Excel or SharePoint. Assists in manual and electronic filing, and in the development of our internal Environmental Management System and transformation to Sharepoint.

  • Prepares briefings, reports, memos, data tables, permit applications, maps, etc.

  • Determines needs and maintains computer system/program requirements to optimize data collection, management, analysis, and reporting.

You Have:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, Geology, Environmental Science or relative technical/scientific discipline required

  • 3+ Years of related environmental compliance work experience required

  • Basic understanding of compliance principles, federal/state regulations, industry standards,and risk mitigation techniques.

  • Familiarity with incident investigations, hazard assessments, and training delivery.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations, remediation technologies, EPA analytical methods, relevant Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, and industry standards.

  • General knowledge of natural gas industry operations and OSHA regulations preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify, measure and analyze environmental risks and develop appropriate programs, procedures and training to manage risks.

  • Demonstrated ability to organize and document detailed data and to develop professional quality reports and presentations.

  • Demonstrated ability to present ideas logically and concisely to diverse audiences at all internal and external levels, both verbally and in writing.

  • Proven ability to use computer software and applications, including Microsoft Office Suite, Sharepoint, GIS, Bluebeam, Adobe, and other scientific or business software for data management, research, analysis and reporting purposes.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish rapport and effective working relationships with business partners, supervisors and peers.

  • Demonstrated ability to verbally communicate basic environmental and scientific information concisely and effectively to diverse groups.

  • Proven ability to establish strong working relationships with external and internal customers and regulatory agencies to effectively carry out work responsibilities.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license

  • Must possess or obtain 40 hour Hazwoper, 8 hr hazwoper refresher training, and professional certifications as available.

We offer a competitive salary range of $94,000.00 to $136,000.00 per year, commensurate with experience, education, and skills. In addition, we provide a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
