Ullico Inc. is actively recruiting a Manager Payroll to be located in our Silver Spring, MD office.

The candidate will Manage Payroll function for all entities (EIN) of the ULLICO Inc. Family of Companies. Provide issue identification, problem solving, financial analysis expertise and research support for a variety of issues. Maintain current knowledge on all associated tax laws across multiple states, including California. Provide sound accounting knowledge relative to account reconciliations. Ability to communicate with all levels of employees, including senior management.

Job Duties/Responsibilities are as follows:




  • Manage the activities of all payroll function and develop and control all tasks necessary to accomplish the organization's payroll processing objectives, including relationships with internal and external customers, including auditors, state and federal regulatory agencies. Interface with internal tax consultants, human resources and other accounting functions.


  • Pro-actively review calculations and reporting of tax liabilities. Respond to questions and special requests from employees and regulatory agencies, in researching laws and regulations regarding taxes and payroll withholding procedures. Provide recommendation for resolution to senior management.


  • Maintain extensive knowledge base on integrated Payroll/ HR system. Work closely with payroll service and human resources regarding any payroll related system issues. Document and update procedures as needed.


  • Maintain interfaces between the payroll system and other systems in the organization such as General Ledger, 401(k) Plan Administrator, Human Resources, etc. Download information from payroll system, summarize and format into excel spread, audit and translate for upload into General Ledger system. Set up 401k loans for payment from payroll. Develop and recommend policies and procedures to enhance the quality and efficiency of operations.


  • Research, compile and prepare payroll-related information to be used in the calculation of pension benefits.


  • Maintain payroll-related accounts and responsibility for the reconciliation and accuracy in the general ledger system. Prepare monthly journal entries, generate, reconcile, audit and submit payment in accordance with established timelines.


  • Prepare various complex accounting reports (quarterly, annual and ad-hoc), schedules, exhibits and other specialized reports for the Financial Statements and senior management. Audit W2 data quarterly, and audit year-end files and reconcile accounts prior to generation of W2s. Audit W2s and correct issues as needed (W2-Cs). Provide payroll service with corrected information to ensure information accuracy and completeness for forwarding to the IRS.


  • Provide financial analysis services, include but not limited it: departmental budget tracking and analysis; and variance reports.


  • Prepare and provide data for the administration of the pension benefit (monthly), HSA benefit (bi-weekly) and the Total Rewards Statement (annually). Pay vendors from payroll deductions and based on benefit invoices. Reallocate claims expenses based on budget accounts. Manage time off and employment verifications.


  • Provide documentation timely to internal and external auditors to support various audits throughout the year.


  • Performs other similar and related duties as required.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will have five to seven years of experience in payroll and benefits. The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor's degree and demonstrate expertise in ERP and payroll software, along with a strong understanding of tax regulations and 401(k) administration. This position is deadline-driven, requiring flexibility to work nights, weekends, and holidays when necessary. Experience working with both internal and external auditors is essential. The role offers a hybrid schedule, with one day required in the office. Previous experience in the insurance and financial services industry is preferred. Additionally, the candidate must be intermediate in Excel, and proficiency will be tested during the interview process.

Salary Range: $110,000.00 - $130,000.00 (depending on relevant experience, skills, and credentials). This position is eligible to participate in Ullico Inc.'s ("Ullico") annual incentive compensation program. An incentive award is contingent upon Ullico meeting financial goals set by the Ullico Board of Directors and your individual performance. The elements of the program, including eligibility, the range of potential incentive compensation, and the factors that determine the payment, will be shared with you after you become employed.
