Lab Assistant (LAB AST 2)

Under supervision, provide technical and organizational support for a fast-paced veterinary clinical laboratory measuring reproductive hormones for a variety of species but primarily horses, dogs and cats on a fee for service basis Provide assistance with sample logging and organization, data base management of patient information, collection of fees, communication with a variety of clients according to established protocols with strict attention to detail. Prepare billing and run credit cards. Answer phones. Stock supplies, maintain laboratory equipment, prepare reagents and keep current on required laboratory safety and training documentation.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

• College level course work in Biological, Chemical Sciences or a closely related field.
• Experience with Excel and Word with ability to quickly and accurately log and enter sample submission information into a database with accuracy and attention to detail.
• Good oral and written communication skills, effectively interacting with customers, visitors, and other lab members, maintaining a pleasant demeanor even when working with difficult clients
• Skill and experience adhering to Standard Operating Procedures in a laboratory, keeping accurate records and performing basic laboratory techniques (centrifugation, preparing solutions and dilutions, using chemical calculations for solution making, and pH determination) using standard laboratory equipment including pipetting equipment, centrifuges, balances, pH meter etc.
• Knowledge of chemicals and safe handling procedures related to Environmental Health & Safety regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in a veterinary clinic or a clinical laboratory.
• Experience running immuno-assays and hormone analysis.
• Knowledge and understanding of the equine industry at large.

Department Overview

The Department of Population Health and Reproduction is an interdisciplinary department, comprised of faculty with expertise in a variety of academic and research fields whose common focus is on the environment, and public and animal health. The Department's focus is on teaching and research programs dedicated to improving a safe and economical food supply. Collecting samples, conducting field data, and gathering and dissemination of information that can lead to enhanced animal and human health, and environment. The faculty promote the development of scientists who are sensitive to the interactions of individuals with populations and their environment. Basic instruction and research will occur in the sciences of microbial populations, pathogelogy, and analytical chemistry. In addition, the faculty also provide applied research and instruction in these areas, and in the areas of production animal health/medicine, clinical veterinary epidemiology, veterinary reproductive health, veterinary public health and food safety, and information science for veterinarians.

Work with animal serum and near radioactivity. Perform repetitive tasks in a fast paced environment. Work with organic solvents such as ether and methanol Wear protective clothing including lab coat, gloves, and safety glasses for extended periods of time. Work a flexible schedule with varied lunch hours. Must be able to perform bench work and transport packages from different buildings. Lift and transport supplies or equipment weighing up to 20 lbs. Must be able to tolerate repetitive pipetting and vortexing. Must be comfortable working with and around radioactivity.
