The Building Services Department is seeking (1) a Horticulturist Assistant to join the already awesome team, taking the Building Services Department to the next level of excellence!

HERE IS WHAT YOU WILL DO

The ideal candidate will be responsible for providing specialized and routine maintenance services primarily related to horticulture, chemical and fertilization application, irrigation, landscaping, etc at all 6 Georgia State Campuses as well as the Language Research Center and Hard Labor Creek State Park. Supervise seasonal staff, contract staff, and volunteer. Participate in the interview process and make hiring recommendations. May perform functional supervisory duties in the absence of an immediate supervisor. Direct a field crew and participate in mowing/trimming, weeding, watering, fertilizing, aerating and pest control of turf and landscaped area(s) by operating light equipment such as mowers, trimmers, sprayers, rototillers, and other gardening tools to maintain grounds in a healthy condition year-round.

In addition to supporting the department with horticulture duties, assignments will generally fall into one of the following groupings, although overlapping of duties may occur as needed:



  • Assist in planting, plant removal, pruning, soil preparation, container maintenance, and other plant care tasks
  • Practice appropriate garden care techniques, including identification and management of weeds, pests, and diseases, follow chemical application guidelines to control disease and eliminate pests. Follow IPM plan where applicable and use approved non-chemical treatments where appropriate. File appropriate pesticide application paperwork.
  • Communicate regularly with Head of Grounds, regarding tasks accomplished, landscape and grounds needs, and suggested focus areas.
  • Maintain and repair irrigation systems, including sprinkler, drip and pump systems according to predetermined maintenance schedules; install new irrigation systems as necessary to ensure that grounds and gardens continue to flourish.
  • Maintain gas and electric powered gardening and landscaping equipment and mowers, repairing and replacing parts, as required, in accordance with preventative maintenance schedules to ensure that equipment is operational and safe.
  • Inspect exterior gardens, including inspection of conditions; fertilizer and pesticide application; and cultivation, transplantation, removal, replacement, watering, misting and pruning of plants, using hand and power gardening tools to maintain year-round and seasonal displays on campus.
  • Utilize standard equipment to execute duties including tool and equipment storage, care and inventory, as well as acquiring equipment and tools required for specific projects. Tools such as hand and mechanized tools will be used to plant trees and plants, and irrigation lines.
  • Assist Department Head with account maintenance, inventory, and related processes.
  • Respond to work order requests in a timely manner.
  • May assist with storm and inclement weather issues including storm preparation and storm damage cleanup.
  • Applying salt/sand and manual shoveling of snow and ice.
  • Removal of campus trash may be required.
  • Create daily schedules and worksheets.
  • Meet and collaborate with contractors to discuss and develop design ideas.
  • Assists in raking, picking up, and disposing of leaves, rubbish, and trash from landscapes.
  • Obtains pricing and availability of plant and other necessary materials for different job sites/locations.

Qualifications :

Minimum Requirements:



  • Associate's degree in Horticulture, Science, Biology, or a related field and two (2) years of experience; or a combination of education and related experience. State of GA Cat. 24 Pesticide License, GCPP or GCLP/PGMS certified, GASWCC Level 1A preferred.


Preferred Hiring Qualifications:



  • Knowledge of public horticulture, landscape/garden design, irrigation systems, interpreting drawings and ecological requirements.
  • Ability to identify a wide variety of horticultural weeds, insects (including beneficials), and diseases, and to determine and implement appropriate treatment, if needed
  • Proficiency with industry standard horticultural practices, processes, tools, and equipment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, take & give direction, work independently, and accomplish tasks effectively and efficiently in public garden, outdoor, and shared office settings.
  • Ability to lift, carry or move up to 25 pounds without assistance.
  • Ability to kneel, sit, stand, and bend for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions, including exposure to hot, cold, wet, humidity, etc.
  • Dependable, punctual, willingness to learn, and attention to detail.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to perform basic-level computer skills in Microsoft Word and Excel, Adobe, Email, Teams, etc.
  • Ability to perform basic math and science skills.
