Position Title:RN Director - Emergency Services Department:Adult Emergency Department Job Description:

General Description:

Under general supervision, responsible for the planning, direction, coordination and control of activities concerned with the Emergency Department.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Provides strategic direction for urgent and emergent care of critically-ill and/or -injured patients in an urban Emergency Department which is also recognized as a Level One Trauma and Comprehensive Stroke Center
  • Provides strong and effective communication, leadership, motivation, and professional development for managers and staff
  • Ensures Emergency Services' contribution to the fiscal health of the organization via development of short- and long-term financial goals for growth, and accountability of annual and long-term budget planning, as well as cost containment, variance analysis, and anticipated trends
  • Prepares business proposals to improved capacity, capability, efficiency and quality of services
  • Establishes and supports programs addressing verification needs, and is accountable for ensuring appropriate Federal, State, and local regulatory agencies' requirements are met within the assigned areas of accountability. Primarily responsible for Emergency Department clinical care, documentation, and education requirements impacting American College of Surgeons (ACS) Verification Review as a Level One Trauma Center for Adults and Pediatrics, as well as Emergency Department requirements impacting The Joint Commission Certification as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, and any additional certifications obtained
  • Plans develops, recommends, and implements policies, procedures and standards for Emergency Services through evidence-based decision-making, and ensures ENA Emergency Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice are adhered and maintained
  • Provides leadership outside of the organization at the Regional, State, and National levels for Emergency Services; actively builds and refines the regional/state/national system of care and profession through community partnerships, professional organization involvement, and external committee representation; advocates for legislation and health policy affecting emergency care
  • Ensures talent management strategy exists for areas resulting in a skilled and high performing workforce, workforce learning and development, as well as retention rates and employee engagement results are preeminent
  • Works collaboratively with the Emergency Department Medical Director to ensure high-quality, cost effective, and efficient patient care
  • Manages and directs the department's administrative, clinical, and financial functions according to established procedures, policies, mission, philosophy and strategic initiatives of OU Health
  • Facilitates an atmosphere of participative management
  • Participates in continuing education, leadership development and research programs
  • Reviews personnel actions of staff to ensure compliance with applicable rules and effective management practices
  • Addresses complaints regarding Emergency Services through personal contact with patients, families, physicians, and employees for resolution
  • Establishes, maintains, and facilitates effective partnerships with physicians, colleagues, and other healthcare professionals to ensure effective coordination and communication among inter- and intra- departmental personnel and activities

General Responsibilities:

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's of Science in Nursing of Master's of Science in Nursing required.

Experience: 5 to 7 years of progressive leadership experience in nursing management within a hospital setting required.

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: Current RN License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact RN License (eNLC).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices and techniques concerning Emergency Nursing.
  • Knowledge of budget and personnel concepts, policies and procedures, and of nursing management and administration.
  • Skill in developing, planning, and implementing effective patient care practices and managing a multi-faceted department.
  • Ability to coordinate activities with other departments and multiple physician groups. Ability to plan and conduct inservice training programs.
