Overview:

The Environmental Sciences Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a creative individual for a research staff position in Aerosol Science and Technology who will focus on the performance of a full range of experimental operations for airborne particulate materials. This position resides in the Aerosol Research Laboratory and the successful candidate will work with scientists and engineers across different disciplinaries on a range of aerosol-centric subjects from fundamental research such as formation and transformation of aerosols to applications such as particle collection and transmission. The candidate will formulate plans to solve research problems, design and execute detailed experimental protocols, and assist the team on projects.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Lead and work with team members to develop research plans for specific airborne particulate material problems.
  • Work independently and in consultation with other PI's to design and develop measurement protocols, devices, and bench-top experimental apparatuses.
  • Work independently in performing established laboratory experiments, and protocols for sampling, collection, and analysis of airborne particulate materials.
  • Collaborate in the development of new analytical methodologies.
  • Participate in planning workflow for the laboratory or field work, including establishing priorities within and between projects, and determining the best direction of the efforts for various experiments, tests, and analyses.
  • Document laboratory activities in appropriate notebooks, electronic spreadsheets, and/or word processing files.
  • Maintain QA/QC control charts; prepare standards to assess QC performance.
  • Aid in developing and presenting laboratory results for program reviews.
  • Obtain and maintain all ORNL training requirements for a radiation worker performing analytical work in designated radiological facilities.
  • Utilize computers in instrumentation operation, data reporting, analytical calculations, sample management, and advanced Multiphysics simulation.
  • Prepare and present research results in peer-reviewed journals, technical reports, professional conferences.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health and quality program requirements.
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in the sciences or engineering with primary emphasis in aerosol science research.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in sampling, collection, and analysis of airborne particulate matter.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the operation and maintenance of advanced aerosol instruments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in computer model simulation and numerical analysis associated with fluid flow, heat and mass transfer of aerosol.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as a team member.
  • Ability to respond quickly to diverse and shifting demands with sudden deadlines on tight schedules.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
