Overview:

We are seeking an Energy Engineer. This position resides in the Energy Management Team in the Integrated Operations Support Division, Facilities and Operations Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

As part of our team, an Energy Engineer will monitor energy, water and resource consumption in buildings by collecting utility and operations data. You will use this information to conduct energy analyses for the identification of lifecycle cost effective opportunities to increase building reliability and minimize the financial impacts of ORNL's operation. This individual will guide the identification and implementation of reliability measures and develop data analytics to inform and support the persistence of savings over time.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Perform and oversee energy and water auditing for a wide building portfolio

  • Utilize a variety of techniques and data sources to assess building energy and water consumption

  • Apply traditional audit methods such as benchmarking and building walkthroughs as well as advanced methods such as remote energy analytics and monitoring based commissioning

  • Identify reliability opportunities, formulate lifecycle cost effective operational improvements

  • Improve energy efficiency and resiliency throughout ORNL by developing energy and water conservation measures and supporting project implementation with technical guidance and oversight

  • Support retro-commissioning and on-going commissioning activities

  • Lead measurement and verification efforts by drafting measurement and verification plans, establishing appropriate data collection, performing necessary calculations and documentation on a periodic basis

  • Support field installation of Smart Metering across the lab to provide data used for Energy Audits

  • Oversee the Audit and ECM documentation (writing of reports) within the created Internal Tracking Tool that is used to report to DOE annually (to comply with the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 and the Energy Act of 2020)

  • Assist with reporting in response to calls from ORNL management and DOE Office of Science as well as prepare technical reports that address these calls

  • Interface with research staff, Lab Space Managers, Operations Managers, subject matter experts and ES&H representatives to maintain compliance and high customer satisfaction while executing energy projects

  • Abide by the principles of Safe Conduct of Research including being personally responsible for ensuring safe operations by raising safety concerns, using a questioning attitude, considering hazards for every task, and never stop learning

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or industrial engineering

  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant employment experience in support of above major duties

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in buildings, ideally with some understanding of identifying life-cycle cost effective Energy Conservation Measures as required by the Energy Act of 2020.

  • Previous experience or familiarity with Building Energy Audits, including knowledge of ASHRAE level 1, 2, and 3 audits

  • Experience with commissioning of building controls, equipment, and systems

  • General knowledge and field experience with facility systems including building envelop, HVAC, electrical, and mechanical

  • Be a self-leader and work without constant direction

  • Strong analytical background

  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.

  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

  • Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
