Department Overview

The Assistant Controller's Organization includes three departments responsible for PG&E Corporation and Pacific Gas and Electric Company's accounting and external reporting, capital recovery and capital-related financial and regulatory forecasting functions.

Position Summary

The Director, External Reporting and Technical Accounting is a high-profile position and ideal for a candidate who enjoys a fast-paced and challenging work environment. We are looking for a strong leader that will develop and maintain key relationships and execute on a vision to enable the group to perform in line with a world-class accounting department. This position provides an excellent overview of both the company and the utility industry and opens the door to many other opportunities within PG&E.

This role manages the team responsible for filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission (10-K, 10-Q), the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and the California Public Utilities Commission. Additionally, this team oversees the technical accounting team, which includes assessing complex transactions for accounting and disclosure implications and analyzing new accounting pronouncements for applicability to the company. This team will also oversee our significant transactions process, finance compliance, and delegation of authority standard. The successful candidate will work with business partners to evaluate potential opportunities and challenges using their understanding of technical accounting and then synthesize research, provide perspective and develop implications for line of business and/or company. The successful candidate will lead ad hoc teams, coach employees and provide thought leadership to the Assistant Controller's organization.

Reporting Relationship

This position reports to Senior Director, Assistant Controller.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develops and leads the department's continuous improvement strategy, including adoption of the Lean methodology.
  • Develops, implements, and enforces policies, procedures, and standards to support the integrity of accounting transactions.
  • Drives and incorporates company's vision and values into the department's daily operating processes.
  • Drives employee engagement (motivates, inspires, coaches, develops, evaluates performance, delivers feedback).
  • Ensures effectiveness of internal controls over accounting and reporting.
  • Leads a team of ~12indirect reports.
  • Monitors accounting performance and recommends action as necessary.
  • Oversees preparation of SEC and regulatory filings, ensuring their completeness and accuracy.
  • Partners with other directors in Finance to ensure the team delivers effectively on cross-functional projects / issues.
  • Plans and oversees the execution of short and long-term plans within the resource requirements and budget to meet department goals and objectives.
  • Serves a lead role in developing the continuous improvement strategy for the organization, including efforts to streamline / improve coordination with the broader Finance team, in particular as it relates to finance compliance/governance.
  • Serves as a key decision maker on accounting policies and standards

This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and assigned headquarter location at least two times per week; subject to change per business needs.

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.

A reasonable salary range is:

Minimum Base Salary (Bay Area) $ 159,000.00

Maximum Base Salary (Bay Area) $ 271,000.00

Background Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Bachelors Degree in Accounting or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 10 years of accounting or related experience, including leadership experience
  • 5 years of supervisory experience

Desired:

  • CPA-Certified Public Accountant certification, or equivalent
  • Masters Degree in Business (MBA)
  • Experience in public accounting
  • Leadership experience, large teams. (Five years preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and SEC
  • Strong analytical and issue resolution skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills; ability to develop strong cross-functional working relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to build excellent relationships and effectively lead cross functional teams.
  • Demonstrates PG&E virtues at the director level
