The opportunity

Our TC Energy Marketing group, a non-regulated affiliate Gas, Power and Emissions marketing and trading business, is looking to add a Lead Commercial Operations Analyst to our Commercial Operations and Asset Management team, based in Houston, TX, to help us grow, manage risk, and optimize the portfolio.

Reporting to the Manager, Commercial Operations & Asset Management, this position is responsible for understanding and coordinating various operations and settlements functions, accurate reporting of MTM and P&L attribution, variance to budget analysis, timely and accurate settlement of physical and financial transactions (Gas & Power). The role is cross functional and will also have exposure to the Asset Management team.

What you'll do

  • Reconcile counterparty commodity invoices with TC's Energy Trade Management System (ETRM)
  • Work closely with and support the commercial team throughout the deal lifecycle
  • Assist in establishing and running routine processes for daily and monthly P&L reporting and variance analysis
  • Validate accurate daily deal entry within TC Energy's systems
  • Generate customer invoices in accordance with contractual terms
  • Contact counterparties to timely resolve billing discrepancies
  • Work closely with internal groups including Trading, Accounting, Credit, Origination, Compliance, Tax, Risk, Contracts etc., as needed to support the business
  • Coordinate activities related to owned and contracted generation with the local Independent System Operator or RTO while providing data analysis and reporting to support internal and external requirements as they relate to Generation, Load, ISO settlements or long-term power contracts
  • Address new requests: understand the core question being asked, capture needed data, build models, validate assumptions, perform analyses
  • Understand the trade capture/modeling of complex non-standard transactions
  • Identify areas of improvement for the desk related to daily and monthly processes
  • Develop and maintain an advanced level of knowledge and understanding of the competitive energy markets, including Fuels and Power

Minimum qualifications

  • Post-Secondary degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Engineering, or related discipline
  • 10 years prior industry experience
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Office with advanced Excel skills
  • Experience with physical / financial power settlements and/or with physical / financial gas settlements (exposure to both would be an asset)

Preferred qualifications

  • Demonstrated in depth knowledge of the wholesale electricity markets, wholesale fuels markets and the associated infrastructure supporting those trading marketplaces
  • Exposure to ETRM (e.g., Endur, Allegro, Right Angle, etc.)
  • Experience supporting external reporting requirements (FERC, EIA, CARB, DOE)
  • Knowledge of North American RTO/ISO market constructs, rules and operations
  • Experience with analyzing and attributing P&L
  • Experience interfacing with traders, mid-office accounting, back-office operations to develop efficient communications and capture all relevant data for valuation, exposure tracking and reporting
  • Experience with Power or Gas Scheduling
  • Experience with SQL, VBA, Python
