No Essential Functions -Culture of Excellence Responsibilities: * See everyone as worthy of respect and attention. * Design care and services for and with each patient. * Recognize that patients see quality service as quality care. * Make it a priority to assist patients, visitors and colleagues. * Take advantage of learning and growth opportunities. * Understand organizational goals and priorities. -Compliance Responsibilities: * Understands and adheres to North Shore Medical Centers' (NSMC) compliance standards as they appear in Corporate Compliance Policies, Code of Conduct, and NSMC's Policies. * Professional, Supervisory and Managerial Staff, keep abreast of all pertinent federal, state and NSMC regulations, laws, and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified. * Managerial Staff ensure that their staff are trained and evaluated on their knowledge of and adherence to compliance policies and procedures specific to their jobs. -Job Specific Responsibilities: (e.g. clerical, patient care, food service, supervisory, etc.) *Receive assignments and work orders. Review work orders, priority status and designated time schedules. Sketch plans and/or read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, operating manuals and manufacturer I s specifications; estimate time, material and cost requirements to install and repair. Operate and test new equipment. *May plan, direct and coordinate the work of subordinates and/or outside contractors engaged in installing, repairing, testing, and maintaining non-clinical mechanical and electro-mechanical equipment and systems. *Regularly confers with Hospital departments to clarify nature of mechanical problems and/or discuss mechanical installation procedures and time requirements for work completion. *Tours work sites regularly to ensure work is progressing satisfactorily and to inspect completed work; instructs or demonstrates proper work methods, and endeavors to ensure work is performed in a safe manner. *Estimates equipment, parts, and materials necessary to complete assigned work and processes requisitions. Ensures parts and materials are issued properly and efficiently utilized. *Participates in developing recommendations regarding replacement of existing equipment, purchase of new equipment, hiring of outside contractors, and improvement of mechanical or electro-mechanical equipment performance. *Prepares and maintains records of all tests conducted and test results of equipment. *Maintains contact with vendors, and representatives of mechanical equipment manufacturers in order to gather and exchange information and resolve problems related to Hospital mechanical or electro-mechanical equipment. *May review plans, blueprints, and specifications for construction or remodeling, and may recommend appropriate modifications or additions to plans as necessary. *Keeps current regarding changes in applicable codes, developments in mechanical/electromechanical equipment, and improved equipment repair, installation or maintenance processes. *Tear down and determine extent of mechanical troubles, repair damaged mechanisms and replace worn or defective parts. Reassemble and adjust for proper operation. *Test workability of units to meet effective operating requirements *Perform hand and bench operations requiring drilling, fitting, adjusting and assembling of various components. *Repairs and overhauls hospital equipment such as automatic doors, beds, carts, stretchers, wheelchairs and rolling stock. *Performs preventive maintenance and repairs mechanical devices such as pumps, compressors, engines, motors, conveyor systems. *Replaces defective mechanical parts, such as gears, bushings and bearings, and related electrical parts, such as brushes, armatures, transformers, and so forth, assembling components according to diagrams. *May supervise and assist with work by outside contractors as required. *Performs and documents equipment repairs; may test new and repaired equipment before it is put into service. *May assist in training staff in operation and repair of equipment. *Order supplies and parts according to established procedures. *May assist in evaluating new equipment. *Establishes and maintains courteous, cooperative relations when interacting with patients, visitors, other staff members, and the public. *Assist other trades personnel as needed in handling materials on major repair or installation projects. *Maintains all required records and information pertinent to costing out work assignments as required. *Keep work areas orderly, clean and safe. Assure proper care in use of tools, equipment and supplies. *Responds to "Code Red" calls. *Maintain and comply with Codes and requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies. *Some overtime required. Education High School Diploma or Equivalent required or Trade/Technical/Vocational Diploma required Can this role accept experience in lieu of a degree? No Licenses and Credentials Experience Approximately three years related experience necessary in order to gain full knowledge of installation, testing, repair and maintenance of mechanical equipment and all applicable codes. required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Vocational training must include courses in mechanics, electrical, blueprint reading, mechanical drawing, shop mathematics, with special emphasis on mechanics. - Interpersonal skills necessary in order to effectively lead a small group of subordinate personnel, and to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships within the department. - Analytical skills necessary in order to organize and oversee the work of others, and to effectively evaluate efficiency of equipment and work performed by subordinates and or outside contractors. - Work requires level of knowledge of installation and repair of mechanical/electro-mechanical equipment, and knowledge of testing and repairing electrical control systems, generally acquired through post-high school technical training in mechanics, usually lasting one year. - Work requires level of knowledge of safe and efficient equipment repair, installation, and preventive maintenance, generally acquired through one year related experience. - Must be able to operate, safely and efficiently a variety of hand and power tools. - Ability to read and write in order to read and fill out material requisitions and work orders; understand and follow written and verbal instructions in order to contact vendors to obtain supplies and equipment not maintained in inventory; and perform noncomplex arithmetic calculations in order to maintain inventory records as normally acquired through completion of high school. - Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively with user departments and outside vendors in acquiring and supplying Hospital personnel with requisition materials/ information. - Ability to read and write, perform noncomplex arithmetic calculations, read blueprints as well as understand basic theories related to mechanics at a level generally acquired through completion of up to one year of technical training beyond high school is preferred.
