Compensation and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $6,250 to $7,084 per month

Salary is competitive and negotiable depending on the strength of qualifications. This is a CSU Management Personnel Plan (MPP) position.

Positions at Fresno State are to perform their work onsite. Some positions, depending upon University needs and operations, may be eligible for remote work, one day per week, pursuant to Fresno State's remote work guidelines and the CSU policy.

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Job Summary

This position demonstrates the University's commitment to a proactive, collaborative, and meaningful effort to both meet our obligations under the state and federal law as the direct point of contact for tribes and tribal members concerning collaborations on all matters related to NAGPRA and Cal NAGPRA, and to continue to build relationships with tribal partners that recognize our history of and contribution to oppression. The Repatriation Coordinator serves as the campus's designated authority to work across campus departments and campus to achieve the university's goals around the timely and respectful consultation around and repatriation of Native American ancestors and cultural items.

The Repatriation Coordinator ensures the university is compliant with all aspects of NAGPRA, Cal NAGPRA, CSU/campus policy, as well as any other guiding policy and practices. In a collaborative process, the incumbent will help draft and develop policies and procedures to support the goals of the project; manage production and/or updates of preliminary inventories, summaries, consultations, and claims in collaboration with faculty and staff; create and maintain a database of Fresno State's NAGPRA and Cal NAGPRA collections; assist with maintenance and upkeep of the collections' storage and curational facility and continued curation of collections as needed; provide collections information, updates, developments, and progress to the campus NAGPRA committee; draft external communication and reports in coordination with the President's Designee and faculty coordinators, including an annual affirmation and inventory of NAGPRA and Cal NAGPRA repatriation efforts; and assist with preparing and submitting NAGPRA and Cal NAGPRA compliance documents.

The Repatriation Coordinator develops tribal relationships that acknowledge and respects a Tribe's sovereignty, cultural protocols, and cultural and religious practices and knowledge. The Repatriation Coordinator will also represent Fresno State on CSU systemwide committees related NAGPRA and Cal NAGPRA, convene any internal committees and personnel necessary for compliance work and efforts, and provides regular status reports regarding repatriation efforts to the Director of Tribal Relations and executive leadership as requested.

Key Qualifications
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA and CalNAGPRA) regulations, and ability to read and analyze NAGPRA documents.
  • Knowledge of consultation practices and processes with Native American Tribes.
  • Knowledge of the processes and procedures of cultural items, including cataloging and curating.
  • Knowledge of the repatriation process.
  • Ability to effectively represent and coordinate organizational strategy and administrative initiatives with campus senior level management, Chancellor's Office, and external contacts.
  • Develop and sustain collegial working relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field: Archaeology, Anthropology, Environmental Studies, Ethnic Studies, History (with a focus on California), Law, Native American Studies, Social Science, Sociology, or a related field.
  • One year experience working with Native American Tribal Nations.
  • One year of experience working within NAGPRA and/or CalNAGPRA
