The Position

Safely drives students, faculty and staff to school-related events. This temporary position will last for the remainder of the Spring 2025 academic schedule for Roanoke College with an estimated schedule of no more than 15 hours per week. Assignments will include day, evening and some weekends, typically less than 4 hours per assignment. Reports to the Executive Director of Explore@RC works in collaboration with the Administrative Assistant of RC-RV.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Driving students, faculty, and staff and ensuring the safety of all passengers by following safety regulations and protocols.
  • Operate the vehicles on assignments safely and efficiently, adhering to all traffic laws and regulations.
  • Report any maintenance or cleanliness issues to the Supervisor.
  • Maintain clear and professional communication with passengers, supervisor and Roanoke College faculty and staff.
  • Maintain accurate records of mileage, passenger counts, and incidents.
  • Comply with all the requirements of the Motor Pool policy published by the Campus Safety office at Roanoke College.
  • Refuel vehicles as needed.
  • Be prepared to handle emergency situations.
  • Must meet the requirements of Virginia Administrative Code 8VAC20-70-280 to include:
  1. Provide an acceptable physical examination form signed by the applicant and a doctor or licensed nurse practitioner
  2. Provide a statement or copy of records from DMV for the preceding 5 years meeting the requirements stated in the Administrative Code referenced above
  3. Furnish a statement signed by 2 reputable persons in the area or in the applicant's community that the applicant is of good moral character
  4. Exhibit license indicating successful examination prescribed in Section 46.2-339 of the Code of Virginia
  5. Be at least 18 years old
  6. Submit to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in compliance with the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 (Public Law 102-143, Title V) as amended, which complies with 49 CFR Parts 40 and 382.

Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Possess a valid driver's license.
  • Pass Roanoke College's van certification
  • Successful completion of a background check and drug screening.
  • Must be in good physical condition to perform the duties of the job.
