The Pathology Support Services Specialist maintains, and coordinates consult services and medical/legal requests for Pathology. Coordinates all Patient Care Requests for both internal and external customers for Pathology. Manages customer service requests for patient care, internal and external, for Pathology, including, but not limited to, patient registration.

Essential Job Statements

  • Coordinates and executes requests from both internal and external physicians and patients for materials as required for patient care issues.
  • Coordinates request of patient material from Pathology archives, ensuring that all pertinent material for patient care is requested.
  • Coordinates distribution of material to appropriate physician, medical institution, and patient.
  • Maintains and responds appropriately to received communications via phone calls, voice messages, email distribution lists, and faxes.
  • Reviews and coordinates with attending pathologist prior to ordering ancillary studies to ensure proper specimen is used; tracks and orders additional stains/tests for pathologists as needed.
  • Collaborate ordering with clinician to discuss any testing issues; in direct contact with patients in order to coordinate transfer of pathology material to outside institution for second opinions and coordinated care.
  • Create and track addendums regarding outside ancillary studies including uploading images of outside reports to the appropriate patients' charts.
  • Provides general clerical support to providers (e.g. collect patient information, prepare materials for meetings/conferences, etc.).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Demonstrates knowledge and related competencies of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age, specific needs and to provide the equitable care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.Neonates (0-4 weeks), Infant (1-12 months), Pediatrics (1-12 years), Adolescents (13-17 years), Adults (18-64 years), Geriatrics (65 years and older)

Required Education:High School Diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Education: Post High School business administration or health care related coursework.

Minimum Qualifications

Years and Type of Required Experience: 2 years of relevant and administrative experience in a related health care field.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Previous experience with medical terminology and Microsoft applications.
