The University of Georgia Facilities Management Division is the largest of seven (7) divisions reporting to the Vice President for Finance and Administration. The exceptional staff of over 900 personnel within the division manage, operate and maintain campus landscapes, buildings and infrastructure to promote the long-term sustainability of the University.

Position Summary

This is manual work at the journeyman level in the installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing and heating systems. Work involves performance of skilled plumbing tasks in maintaining, repairing, and servicing a variety of fixtures and equipment. Routine maintenance, service, and repair work is performed independently. Assignments are normally received orally or through written work orders. Work is inspected on completion for conformity to instructions and quality of work.

  • able to read and interpret building plans, sketches, building schematics, and blueprints

Physical Demands

  • Bend, stoop, stand, squat, work with hands above head, work from a standard and/or extended ladder and lift up to 75 lbs. throughout the day
  • Work in a very limited space and/or cramped areas
  • Work under adverse weather conditions (i.e. hot, cold, rain)

  • Assembles, repairs, installs pipe fittings and inserts valves and ball cocks
  • Packs faucets, repairs waste, sewage, and drainage pipes
  • Replaces broken fixtures and installs new fixtures
  • Caulks and packs joints
  • Tests for leaks

  • Automatic oil burners/gas burners in furnaces
  • Gas meters
  • Regulators
  • Steam and hot water heating systems
  • Sprinkler systems
  • Pipes, valves, and fittings on pumps
  • Adjusts gas flow and air supply control valves to insure correct combustion

  • Fuses bonds to pipe joints
  • Tests and examines gas pipeline and equipment to locate leaks and faulty pipe connections
  • Determines pressure and gas flow using manometer, voltmeter, combustible gas indicator, and soap
