We're searching for the next generation of innovative minds who want to shape the world and live to build. CBIG is looking for a Senior Civil/Earthwork Estimator to join our Lansing region. The Senior Estimator will work closely with CBIG leadership in managing specific project assignments while focusing on project strategies such as problem solving and delivering an excellent product to our clients. This position focuses on specific project assignments and takes a leadership role in preparing estimate deliverables.

What You Will Do:

As Senior Civil/Earthwork Estimator, your primary daily responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:



  • Supervises, checks work, and mentors Estimators and Estimating Engineers
  • Develops and oversees conceptual estimates for assigned projects, supports the planning and engineering groups in the development of all levels of estimates, and collects and analyzes close out and benchmark data
  • Leads major estimating efforts
  • Develops and clarifies estimate reports
  • Cultivates strong subcontractor knowledge and relations
  • Experienced in presenting estimating results to clients
  • Demonstrates knowledge of self perform trades
  • Competent at conceptual and detailed levels of estimating
  • Completes value engineering leadership and tracking
  • Drives deadlines and achieves results
  • Demonstrates mastery of scope review process
  • Consults with architects and engineers on project parameters
  • Ensures database-pricing updates are completed
  • Consults with clients, vendors, personnel, and leadership in other departments to discuss and formulate estimates as well as resolve issues or discrepancies
  • Develops long-term relationships with project stakeholders and achieves successful project outcomes
  • Reviews material and labor requirements to decide what is most cost-effective for specific projects
  • Demonstrates knowledge of client relations and estimate presentations
  • Possesses great knowledge with regard to technical specifications and pricing levels
  • Meets deadline challenges and has the ability to prioritize multiple assignments simultaneously
  • Provides technical assistance to Project Managers in negotiating contracts, change orders, etc. as required
  • Responsible for timely and complete bid submission and management of all required bid submission requirements (i.e. schedule, logistics, breakdown pricing, etc.)
  • Ensure clean handoff of estimate, bidding information, drawings, specifications, etc. to project management team; assist with kickoff meetings
  • Organizes and performs quantity take-offs
  • Honors the brand promises of the Project Planning Group at Christman. Foundational to our brand is: providing accurate costing; proactively offering creative solutions for the team; and understanding our client's business to optimize capital investment and to win as a team
  • Completes assigned and required training for this role


What You Will Bring to the Team:

Required experience, knowledge, and skills for this role include:



  • Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Engineering, Business, Finance, or a related job field
  • Eight (8) years of estimating experience in construction or related field
  • OR equivalent combination of the above education, training, and experience


Preferred experience, knowledge, and skills for this role include:



  • Master's Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Engineering, Business, Finance, or a related job field
  • Ten (10) years commercial construction experience
  • Capability to complete large complex competitive bid projects

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Knowledge of building construction, materials, systems, market conditions, trade practices
  • Must have conceptual ability to work with minimum information and quickly develop an understanding of the owner and/or architect requirements
  • Complete knowledge of the estimating documents and the ability to provide accurate qualitative and quantitative analysis of the documents
  • Familiarity with construction project management software
  • Strong computer knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook

Work Environment and Physical Demands: The majority of work is completed outside at the construction site and in an office trailer where the project is monitored, and daily decisions are made about construction activities. The position is often exposed to sounds and loud noises, such as construction equipment. The job requires the wearing of protective equipment when on the construction site (hardhats, safety glasses, and highly visible clothing). Temperatures and conditions may vary depending on the weather and seasons. As part of our focus on being a Great Place to Work, we want to make sure we are clear on a few more basics we expect:



  • Ability to occasionally stand, walk, sit, reach (with hands and arms), climb, balance stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Must be able to talk, hear, use hands and fingers to handle or feel, be able to use a telephone and operate a keyboard.
  • Be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.
