Primary Purpose of Department
The Office of Alumni Engagement's primary purpose is to develop, coordinate and promote programs for our alumni to keep them connected and involved with UNC Charlotte and one another. To serve UNC Charlotte alumni and students in order to strengthen connections and encourage involvement with the institution. The Office of Alumni Engagement is within the division of University Advancement.
Primary Purpose of Position
Reporting to the Associate Director for Signature Programs and Sponsorships, the Assistant Director of Affinity Engagement is responsible for managing affinity-based alumni events and programs. Affinity-based events and programs are defined as events or programs organized by and for groups of alumni with a shared interest or experience. Events may be in person, on or off campus, as well as virtual. Affinity examples include, but are not limited to, geographic location, student organization affiliation, and professional industry. The position is responsible for managing volunteers and committees working on specific programs or events. This position will strategically develop programs, activities, and communications to connect, serve, and engage alumni within various affinities. This position will respond to alumni inquiries and proactively identify alumni groups to engage.
The position is also responsible for serving as the Alumni Engagement liaison with the Athletics department and will support athletics-related events such as watch parties and conference tournament events. The position will also support the Associate Director for Signature Programs and Sponsorships with tailgate programming, as needed.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
Program Management

  • The Assistant Director of Affinity Engagement is responsible for managing affinity-based alumni events and programs. Affinity-based events and programs are defined as events or programs organized by and for groups of alumni with a shared interest or experience. Events may be in-person on or off campus, as well as virtual. Affinity examples include, but are not limited to, geographic location, student organization affiliation, and professional industry. The position is responsible for managing volunteers and committees working on specific programs or events. This position will strategically develop programs, activities, and communications to connect, serve, and engage alumni within various affinities. This position will respond to alumni inquiries and proactively identify alumni groups to engage.
  • In collaboration with the Associate Director for Signature Programs and Sponsorships, the Assistant Director plans, implements, and executes programs and services for Charlotte alumni with a shared interest or experience-based affinity.
  • Establish, revamp, and annually assess affinity-based programming to ensure alignment with alumni engagement strategic plan, campaign, and fundraising goals - including using quantitative and qualitative metrics to define and measure program success.
  • Work with various volunteer leaders to align affinity group priorities with university priorities as the Alumni Engagement strategic plan is rolled out over the next 1-3 years.
  • The Assistant Director will collaborate with the Alumni Communications Specialist and the Alumni Engagement Social Media Manager to ensure that the communications and marketing initiatives are aligned and successfully coordinated with their programming area. The position will work with the specialist to develop a yearly communications plan.


Volunteer Management
  • The Assistant Director will serve as the primary volunteer manager for corporate alumni networks, including, but not limited to, Bank of America, Charlotte Ally, Alumni Campus Employee (ACE), Truist, TIAA, etc. The position will also manage volunteers and committees working on specific programs or events.
Fundraising
  • Work with volunteer boards to reach 100% giving by members during each fiscal year. This may require creating and sending letter and/or email solicitations and direct verbal asks.
Other Work Responsibilities

  • The Assistant Director will be responsible for developing and managing a budget for their area of oversight.
  • The Assistant Director will exercise sound judgment in selecting event venues and vendors. The position will assess vendors and venues from a risk management perspective in order to ensure that the university's safety standards are met.

Minimum Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's degree and one year of experience in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • At least 2 years of experience in event planning or a closely related field.
  • Program management and event planning skills are highly desirable.
  • Experience working in alumni engagement or higher education is a plus.
  • Volunteer management experience is a plus.
  • Capable of managing competing priorities and multiple deadlines, and seeing projects through from beginning to end.
  • The ability to travel and participate in evening and weekend activities.
  • The ability to authentically and enthusiastically represent the mission, vision and values of UNC Charlotte and contribute to its diverse and inclusive campus culture as a strong and compelling advocate.
