Knife River has an excellent opportunity for an area operations manager. The basic function of a area operations manager for our asphalt and yards is to provide direction and leadership to our operation and maintenance of asphalt plan production.

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Over 3 years up to and including 5 years from post high school, work, military, institutional or vocational environment.
  • Minimum 5 years management experience.
  • Minimum 8 years asphalt production.


Preferred Requirements:



  • Hold Bituminous plant certifications.
  • Have previous management experience.


Knoweledge, Skills, and Abilities:



  • Have asphalt production knowledge.
  • Must be able to navigate computer software systems.
  • Be able to build & maintain relationships with agencies & community leaders.
  • Have knowledge and understanding of regulatory compliance.


Job Duties/Responsibilities:



  1. Monitor material quality, inspect, & troubleshoot material. Work closely with Quality Control Department.
  2. Coach and monitor Plant Managers and sites to comply with OSHA, MSHA and safety regulations.
  3. Oversee Calibration of plants for best-in-class QAQC.
  4. Trouble shoot downtime and eliminate or minimize the causes in the future by implementing preventive maintenance procedures.
  5. Oversee the training of plant employees.
  6. Maintain aggregate stockpile best practices to ensure accuracy.
  7. Work with and support Rail Logistics Manager on rail movements into distribution yards.
  8. Record pertinent information accurately and relay production, quality, equipment and personnel information to appropriate individuals.
  9. Oversee and approve work hours of personnel and pertinent job information daily.
  10. Perform monthly equipment, walk around and site inspections to identify and correct any unsafe conditions and keep equipment properly maintained.
  11. Communicate effectively (verbal, listening, written) and work with difficult people under high stress situations. Self-motivated, team-player with good interpersonal skills; ability to maintain positive customer relations and act courteous/respectful of others.
  12. Troubleshoot and problem solve situations/problems (material, quality, equipment, operation/repair, etc.). Monitor and discuss production problems with co-workers and managers/supervisors.
  13. Directs operation and maintenance of asphalt production. Assures that work is in conformity with federal and state standards, accepted principles of design and engineering, and available funds. Addresses meetings of interested parties to explain plans and activities of department.
  14. Communicate effectively (verbal, listening, written) and work with difficult people under high stress situations. Self-motivated, team-player with good interpersonal skills; ability to maintain positive customer relations & act courteous/respectful of others.
  15. Monitor and discuss production problems with co-workers and managers/supervisors.
  16. Ensure MSHA, OSHA, EPA, DNR, safety and environmental regulation compliance, Lockout/Tagout.
  17. Performs other duties as assigned.
