Project/Unit Description

The GTRI Field Office located in Patuxent River, MD was established in 2014 and serves as a trusted agent to the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) and the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) in support of the development, test, and acquisition program management of crucial Naval Aviation warfighting capabilities. The Pax River Field office's focus is on Jammer Technique Optimization (JATO) for Next Generation Jammer & other electronic attack (EA) weapon systems, Hardware Open Systems standards and prototyping, Live, Virtual, Constructive solutions for test/training ranges, Fleet Experimentation support and Aircraft Survivability enhancements. Our unique partnership as a University Affiliated Research Center (UARC) allows us to partner with the Navy to foster SBIR/STTR development, perform "White-Hat" analysis and requirements curation and assist in the development of capability roadmaps.

The modeling and simulation engineer position supports the Patuxent River Field Office located in Lexington Park, MD. The appropriate candidate will manage the planning, testing, execution and completion of large scale, technically complex modeling and simulation projects for rapidly fielding Department of Defense (DoD) aircraft programs.

Job Purpose

The Modeling and Simulation (M&S) Engineer works closely with research, development, and testing teams to combine simulation modeling with data analytics in order to provide recommendations to optimize system designs in support of current and future research, development, and testing efforts. Specifically, the M&S Engineer is responsible for constructing computer simulation models, verifying and validating simulation models, performing simulation experiments to predict system behaviors, providing solutions to project stakeholders, and improving systems and processes. The M&S Engineer is familiar with important M&S concepts and techniques, constantly keeps abreast of new tool and language developments, and is familiar with a wide range of both open source and proprietary modeling and simulation tools, frameworks, and environments, such as AFSIM, AnyLogic, Arena, ExtendSim, OpenFoam, OpenModelica, NetLogo, etc. In addition to tools, an M&S Engineer should be aware of many of the core M&S techniques - such as discrete event simulation, continuous simulation, agent-based modeling, distributed simulation, and conceptual modeling. At higher levels, the M&S Engineer/Specialist guides and conducts modeling, simulation, and analysis activities which includes eliciting requirements from stakeholders to support the design and implementation of M&S frameworks, computer simulation models, and simulation experiments. Furthermore, the M&S Engineer is responsible for ensuring that models and simulations are designed according to M&S best practices and standards as well as for flexibility to support future modeling needs and enhancements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage all technical aspects of product or system design including directing multiple lab resources for large scale product or system analyses
  • Manage sub-contractor resources supporting all M&S areas (definition, requirements analysis, synthesis, systems analysis and implementation)
  • Conduct product or system design analysis translating requirements into valid models and experimental designs for systems of high complexity
  • Develop technical reports and diagrams detailing product or system attributes
  • Guide the development and strategy of reusable modeling expressions and tool chains

Additional Responsibilities

  • Manage sponsored research projects and project execution by tracking budget, schedule, and progress against plan
  • Provide configuration management and quality assurance process support
  • Support purchasing requirements as needed by sponsored projects
  • Develop physics-based models and perform complex math/physics based analysis for radar and sensor capabilities
  • Analyze data and write technical reports
  • Manage the technical planning and execution of aircraft improvement projects as determined by sponsor requirements

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience in developing high-fidelity real time weapon, aircraft and countermeasure models
