The Director -Payroll Tax & Expense is responsible for the overall leadership and direction of the payroll, tax and expense processes.

This role is responsible for the overall quality of service delivery for payroll, tax and employee expense reimbursements. Builds and maintains relationships internally and externally with individuals at all levels of the organization, and oversees the development and maintenance of policies and procedures for areas of responsibility.

This role will also form an integral part of the Financial Services leadership team in providing strategies and insights in their areas of responsibility.

This is a hybrid role

Job Responsibilities:

  • Direct and oversee delivery by accounting and reporting team(s) by providing the required resources to ensure timely and accurate processing of all activities.
  • Influence and engage with key stakeholders (e.g., cross-functional leaders, board members, sponsors, governmental and regulatory agencies) to share expert advice and influence decision-making.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve efficiency of accounting and financial reporting processes and make recommendations/ drive implementation.
  • Lead projects and planning for major accounting and financial reporting systems for the organization, including overhauls, upgrades, and implementations.
  • Foster a culture of financial and accounting compliance, and effective finance and accounting workflows at St. Jude.
  • Stay updated with latest developments in the field (e.g., latest updates to federal and state laws) and evaluate and advise on the impact of new related strategies, programs, and/or regulatory actions.
  • Evaluate the performance of all direct reports, providing constructive criticism, feedback, and opportunities for growth and professional development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of the department and institution.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance.

Minimum Education and/or Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, auditing, finance, or related field of study required.
  • Master's degree preferred.

Minimum Experience:

  • Minimum Requirement: 10+ years of experience in finance and accounting (e.g., payroll, sponsored research accounting, grants accounting, Taxation, Accounts Payable).
  • Experience building systems/tools/processes/workflows to continuously improve the quality and efficiency of services.
  • Proven experience working in multifunctional environment and influencing critical cross-functional stakeholders to drive processes/systems and outcomes.
  • Experience with accounting, grants, payroll/taxation policies, and other relevant established confidentiality policies.
  • Experience leading & managing teams in a supervisory/ leadership capacity.
  • Proven performance in earlier role.
  • Dedicated payroll and tax experience strongly preferred
  • Prior Workday experience preferred
  • Academic medical institution experience a plus
  • Professional certification (Certified Public Accountant (CPA)/Certified Research Accountant (CRA)/Certified Management Accountant (CMA)) preferred.
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) preferred

Compensation

In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $138,320 - $262,080 per year for the role of Director- Payroll, Tax & Expense.
