Job Summary:

The purpose of the Paramedic is to provide medical care to injured jockeys, patrons and employees. All Paramedic guidelines are current Allina Health Systems Protocols, as Canterbury Park is in their PSA. Our Medical Director is also an Allina ER Physician. Responsible for supporting the Companies mission, vision, and values by providing fun and games like no place else, and adheres to the Canterbury Way by focusing on our core values.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Lead by example
  • The Paramedic is responsible for providing medical assistance during all emergency situations during their shift. Shifts could include morning horse training hours, live racing hours, and/or any number of special events or concerts that Canterbury Park hosts.
  • Observe, participate, manage overall patient care, and evaluate patients' conditions to determine right course of treatment.
  • Responsible for maintaining a high degree of hospitality, morale, fosters teamwork, inspires collaboration, as well as a positive and professional demeanor at all times. Lead by example!
  • Comply with all safety guidelines and recognize and promptly report unsafe situations.
  • Complete reports and other documentation to give clear and accurate description of events.
  • Examine jockeys that need to be approved to ride again.
  • Maintain professional appearance wearing uniform supplied by Canterbury Park.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all patient information in accordance to HIPAA guidelines, and pass all information onto the on-duty Security Supervisor.
  • Communicate with police/ambulance personnel as necessary.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work environment.
  • Remain current on all department and company safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications:



  • Must have current and valid Paramedic license issued by MN EMS Regulatory Board, and/or current NREMT Certification.
  • Good written & verbal communication skills.
  • Current CPR certification, at minimum Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS).
  • Valid MN state driver's license.
  • Ability to use good judgment in assessing difficult situations.
  • Ability to interact cordially with all guests, employees, and the public.
  • Must be able to pass Canterbury Park's pre-employment screening which includes a criminal background check, verification of work history, Drug Screening, and Canterbury Park's Safe Driving Policy.
  • Must be able to attain a Minnesota Racing Commission (MRC) license.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification

  • Maintain a flexible working schedule, which consists of nights and weekends during the live racing season May-September
  • While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee must be able to stand, walk, and sit which may be required for long periods of time, and may involve climbing stairs, walking up inclines, or on uneven terrain throughout their assigned shift.
  • Occasional bending, kneeling, crouching, jumping, and crawling.
  • Must be able to use hands and fingers to grip, pinch, handle or feel objects or tools.
  • Ability to operate and communicate through speaking and hearing via radio or telephone equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Must be able to work well under pressure and in stressful situations.
  • This position involves working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
