PSYCHIATRIC MENTAL HEALTH NURSE PRACTIONER

Diamond Grove Center is searching for a skilled and experienced Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practioner. This position will be fulltime, with hours of 8:00am-5:00pm Monday-Friday.

Diamond Grove Center is a 61 bed, behavioral health psychiatric hospital located in the beautiful neighborhood of Louisville, Miss. Diamond Grove Center features include, individual units for children, as well as adolescents. Diamond Grove Center offers inpatient care acute care, as well as residential treatment for adolescents. The PMHNP is responsible for providing primary healthcare to patients and families, focusing on health maintenance, disease prevention, patient education and counseling. The Advance Practice Nurse works under direct supervision of a physician following established guidelines as required and within established scope of practice.

Full-time employee: Hours vary based on staffing needs and include day, evening, night, and weekend shifts. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include, but are not limited to:

THE ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS ARE CATEGORIZED UNDER THE JCAHO STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE. Note: The essential job functions of this position are not limited to the duties listed below.

  1. Integrates the services of the programs with each other and with the mission of the hospital.
  2. Together with the CEO, Medical Director, Clinical Directors, and CNO determines the qualifications and competence of hospital personnel who provide patient care services.
  3. Together with the hospital staff, monitors, assesses, and improves the quality of care and the services provided.
  4. As appropriate, provides in-service training and continuing education of hospital staff.
  5. Contributes with the hospital staff to the marketing effort of the hospital.
  6. Through example sets the standard for the highest quality medical and psychiatric treatment.
  7. Demonstrates the ability to perform physical exams on all patients, children through the geriatric population.
  8. Obtains and documents patient's medical history. Identifies health risk factors.
  9. Actively integrates developmental age and growth theory into all aspects of patient care.
  10. Demonstrates understanding of the patients' role in the family system and importance of the parent/guardian or legal obligation in the treatment process, when applicable.
  11. Demonstrates knowledge of the current psychotropic medications and possible side effects.
  12. Demonstrates basic familiarity and knowledge of major diagnostic criteria for adults as described in DSM-IV.
  13. Provides appropriate nursing care consistent with diagnostic criteria tailored to meet the needs of the patient population.
  14. Understands the need for limit setting demonstrates competency in managing behavioral issues and utilizes behavior modification techniques in a consistent, caring manner.
  15. Uses appropriate verbal and nonverbal communication.
  16. Demonstrates knowledge of group dynamics and interactions specific to developmental needs of all patients.
  17. Demonstrates the ability to diagnose and treat common acute illnesses.
  18. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  19. Orders and interprets diagnostic tests, i.e., laboratory work, x-rays, EKG.
  20. Demonstrates the ability to prescribe medications (see individual state laws) and non-pharmacological therapies based on the patient's diagnoses, health history and age.
  21. Encourages positive health behaviors for the maintenance of health and the prevention of disease. This is done through education and counseling.
  22. Always applies standardized care guidelines in clinical practice.
  23. Provides patient and/or family with health education, counseling and referrals to other healthcare professionals and community resources when appropriate.
  24. Assesses and documents patient and/or family psychosocial issues.
  25. Collaborates with physicians and other members of the health team to plan optimal care for the patient.
  26. Works with the patient and family to formulate a patient treatment and education plan.
  27. Provides follow-up care, determines effectiveness of the treatment plan, reassesses and changes the plan as needed.
  28. Documentation meets all standards and policies. Documentation includes all findings, interventions, and results.
  29. Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
  30. Stays current with medical advancements, new technology, new drugs through continuing education classes, society meetings, professional journals etc.
  31. Follows and abides by Company policies, procedures, and Corporate Compliance Program, as applicable to role and responsibilities.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program required.

  • One-year prior psychiatric experience in mental health nursing preferred.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/KNOWLEDGE

  • Licensure and registration by the Mississippi Board of Nursing as an PMHNP
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Issues.
  • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMNTS:

Overall physical workload is light. Ability to communicate orally and in writing with others. Must be mobile throughout the facility and system entities to attend meetings and make rounds. No chemical exposure. May require flexible hours. Frequent sitting for long periods of time. Occasional operation of standard office equipment and computers. Frequent use of telephones. Constant attention to multiple details. Frequent problem solving and decision making. Occasional exposure to stressful situations.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Exposure to psychiatric patients who may exhibit violent/aggressive behavior. Potential for exposure to communicable diseases, blood/body fluids and other hazardous waste. General hospital environment.
