The Musculoskeletal Digital Innovation and Informatics Program (https://www.musculoskeletal.ai/) at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School has an immediate opening for a motivated Data Engineer to work with a multidisciplinary team of biomedical engineers, orthopedic surgeons, and computer and data scientists to contribute to development of data pipelines to process electronic medical records to assist with clinical care, research and operation. This opportunity is primarily focused on translational research with immediate impact on clinical care of patients with a range of musculoskeletal conditions, through publication of novel findings and development of computational tools used by clinicians.

This Data Engineer will be responsible for:

  • Working closely with the team to create data processing pipelines and fulfilling requests using a variety of database and analytic technologies
  • Supporting the design, implementation, and maintenance of Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) processes to gather and process data from electronic medical records
  • Troubleshooting issues with data processing pipelines and escalating problems requiring in-depth knowledge to the team lead
  • Participating in discussions with clinicians, researchers, and administrators to identify and refine project requirements
  • Collaborating with other data engineers on tools, languages, and code/process improvements, including code reviews
  • Producing and maintaining documentation on processes, database models, and project workflows

To qualify, you must have:

  • 1+ years of experience is required
  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field is required. Master's degree is a plus
  • Experience with Python programming and data processing libraries (e.g., pandas, NumPy, etc.) is required
  • Experience with SQL and database querying is required
  • Familiarity with building dynamic visualizations and ETL process design/implementation
  • The ability to learn new concepts and grow as a data engineer
  • Strong analytical skills, with attention to detail and accuracy
  • The ability to maintain positive and productive relationships and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical users

Location: This position is hybrid with both in person and remote work days each week.
