Purpose

Manages evidence, inventory, and procurement for the Police Department, ensuring compliance with laws and policies. Maintains records, processes evidence, oversees purchases, and tracks budgets. Facilitates property returns, testifies in court, and manages evidence room to ensure efficient operations

Responsibilities
  • Evidence Handling: Verifies packaging of incoming items, including hazardous and biohazardous items. Photograph evidence for police investigations. Respond and process crime scenes as needed. Liaison with local area law enforcement crime scene teams.
  • Evidence Management: Transports evidence in a secure manner from collection points throughout the city to various locations. Ensures accurate chain of custody and that documentation in record management system is correct. Responsible for integrity for evidence received until final disposition.Complete a monthly report that outlines evidence that came in, what was sent to a lab, reports received from lab, and evidence destroyed
  • Record-Keeping & Documentation: Updates and maintains evidence databases. Keeps records of evidence custody, chain of custody, property receipts, and control files. Documents receipt, transport, release, and disposal of evidence per legal and departmental policies. Composes correspondence for public and police inquiries. Enters confidential data in the Records Management System (RMS) and ensures compliance with federal and state policies.
  • Property Management: Releases property to rightful owners per regulations. Log all lost and found property that is turned into UTPD. Attempt to locate owner for property and sends notification regarding found property. Works with officers and legal team to verify case status before releasing items. Ensures proper documentation for all property transactions. Properly dispose property if owner is not located. Maintains accurate records of stored and returned property.
  • Financial & Budget Management: Tracks and reports daily expenses in Excel. Creates reports and schedules for department assets. Supports financial planning by monitoring expenditures and forecasting needs.
  • Administrative & Facility Management: Operates various computer systems and software. Maintains evidence facility operations and ensures compliance with safety regulations. Participates in accreditation processes such as CALEA, completing necessary documentation. Supports department efficiency by managing office supplies and operational logistics. Assists in administrative functions to maintain smooth department operations.
  • Inventory & Procurement: Manages evidence supplies and equipment needed. Orders and stocks supplies, materials, and forms. Tracks inventory levels and participates in audits.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, Public Administration, Business, or a related field (or equivalent experience) is required, along with two or more years of experience in evidence handling, inventory management, procurement, or law enforcement support.
  • Candidates must have a strong understanding of state and federal laws related to evidence handling and property management, as well as proficiency in Records Management Systems (RMS), database entry, and financial tracking.
  • Experience with budgeting, procurement, and inventory control is essential, along with strong skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, and database management systems.
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality, ensure chain of custody, and prepare court exhibits is required.
  • Candidates must be able to lift and transport evidence and property, possess a valid driver's license, and pass a background check.
  • Strong attention to detail, communication, and organizational skills are also essential.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a law enforcement agency or evidence management unit is highly desirable.
  • Additional training or certification in evidence handling, property management, procurement, or forensic science is preferred.
  • Familiarity with CALEA accreditation standards and law enforcement records management systems (RMS) is a plus.
  • Strong proficiency in financial reporting, grant management, and auditing is beneficial.
  • Candidates with experience handling court exhibits and testifying in legal proceedings are preferred.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, database management, and inventory tracking software are an advantage.
Salary Range

69,000+ depending on qualifications

Work Shift
  • Monday through Friday, in person only.
  • Will require occasional overtime and on call work
  • Nights, weekends, holidays, and some severe weather work will be required.
