Shift Timing (Day/ Evening/ Night): Day

Working Hours: Monday-Friday, 40 hrs/week

Job Description:

Harm Reduction Coordinator:

  • Peer Recovery Specialist the Hampton and Peninsula Health Districts (HPHD) are seeking two Peer Recovery Specialists to provide support services in our certified harm reduction program. The program is focused on individuals who are using substances. The PRS must have an understanding of, and respect for, each individual's unique path to recovery. The Specialist must have a working knowledge of the drug and alcohol treatment systems and a demonstrated commitment to the recovery community.
  • The Recovery Specialist's role is to support others in recovery from a substance use disorder. The Recovery Specialist will serve as a role model, mentor, advocate, and motivator to recovering individuals in order to help prevent relapse and promote long-term recovery. The Recovery Specialist must demonstrate an ability to share personal experiences and to develop authentic peer-to-peer relationships.


Role & Responsibilities:

  • Provide a supportive environment to clients where you can identify and build on strengths and enable them to empower themselves, recognizing that there are multiple pathways to achieve recovery.
  • Develop an individualized plan directed toward the goals, hopes, and aspirations of the client and respond to the specific needs that the client has identified.
  • Maintain project logs, reports and records in appropriate files and database(s).
  • Advocate on behalf of clients to seek wrap around services, register clients on a resource referral platform, protect the rights of the client, and assist in reducing associated stigma. Train the client in the use of personal and community resources.
  • Develop relationships with community groups/agencies in partnership with others in the agency.
  • Work with HPHD staff and other community professionals to implement and promote Harm Reduction activities in the community.
  • Develop, implement, and promote ongoing community training opportunities.
  • Work in cooperation with the client's family members, other providers, and significant others that are involved in the client's recovery plan.
  • Identify barriers (internal and external) to full participation in community resources and developing strategies to overcome those barriers.
  • Observe all rules of confidentiality relating to clinical information and treatment, both internally and when dealing externally with agencies and individuals.
  • Maintain professional conduct standards at all times, following the guidelines outlined by the Hampton and Peninsula Health Districts.


Team and Professional Development:

  • Coordinates activities with supervisor to assure optimum use of time and effort.
  • Attends staff meetings and community meetings.
  • Participates in in-services, workshops, and classes to maintain knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs). Attends program-required training/educational sessions.
  • Identifies and requests attendance at appropriate educational programs to enhance job performance.
  • Preferred requirements/KSAs
  • Knowledge of harm reduction principles.
  • Proficient ability with Microsoft Office, Word, and Excel.
  • The ability to communicate information clearly and efficiently.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Knowledge and ability to speak a second language a plus.


Qualifications:

  • Part or full time paid or voluntary work experience working with individuals who use substances and/or their families.
  • Personal experience with substance use services.
  • Certification as Certified Recovery Specialist a plus.
