Job Description
The Student Development Specialist provides academic, career discernment, and transfer planning advisement to students in all majors, and is responsible for advising a large cohort of students from connection to completion. This position serves as a conduit for students to access other academic support services, financial aid, and co-curricular activities to support their success.

Duties include, but are not limited to, advising students in face-to-face and online environments; using computerized advising and career assessment tools; creating and updating DegreeWorks plans; providing academic program planning to students at their high school; assisting students with navigating and understanding college; including selecting a major, degree and course requirements; using online resources including O*Net, ARTSYS,Focus2Career, Degree Works and the College Catalog to provide students with up-to-date and accurate information; documenting all student interactions; maintaining appropriate paperwork; presenting at advising and career-related events and performing other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Employees of Harford Community College, including instructors for online and virtual courses, must be residents of Maryland or the contiguous states of Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia or the District of Columbia; non-residents are expected to relocate to meet this requirement.

Required Education
Bachelors Degree
Required Experience
3 years of related academic advising and/or career counseling experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of current advising and career planning technologies and resources.
  • Experience with individualized and group instruction techniques.
  • Proficient in a Windows-based PC environment including MS Office Suite.
  • Ability to provide services to students of diverse backgrounds
  • Knowledge of Web 2.0 advising and/or career services.
  • Ability to work and cooperate with co-workers and supervisors at all levels.
  • Ability to work with, within, and promote a diverse workforce and environment.
  • Ability to coordinate the activities of several ongoing projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to understand and act on oral and written instructions in English.
  • Ability to maintain customer service and satisfaction as it relates to assigned unit or area of expertise.
  • Ability to learn and perform all essential job functions accurately.

Preferred Qualifications
Masters degree in psychology, counseling, human development, higher education or related field.
Hours per Week 20
General Weekly Work Schedule
Monday: 10:00am-4:00pm
Tuesday: 9:00am-4:00pm
Thursday: 10:00am-5:00pm
