Position Description
Employees in this classification provide support in an assigned research laboratory conducting specified phases of research projects. Performs work independently and is responsible for developing new procedures and techniques to be utilized in the laboratory and in experiments, and new applications for standard procedures and techniques. Work is performed under usual laboratory conditions. Some hazards may be present due to use of radioactive, carcinogenic or other potentially harmful substances. Responsibilities also include ensuring overall cleanliness of the laboratory and laboratory equipment, and ordering and maintaining an adequate stock of necessary supplies. May instruct or direct work of subordinate laboratory personnel.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Assist P.I. in maintaining a supportive and collegial working environment.
  • Maintains appropriate documentation for all experiments (lab notebook), protocols, equipment, safety requirements, inventory, and orders.
  • Ensures overall cleanliness and organization of the laboratory and laboratory equipment.
  • Orders and maintains adequate stocks of all necessary supplies and consumables, with PI approval.
  • Verifies the good working order of all essential laboratory equipment daily, and takes immediate measures when malfunctions are noted.
  • Plans, designs and conducts laboratory experiments.
  • Summarizes data and assists PI in data analysis.
  • Execution of experiments: handling and working with rodents, ear punches, extraction of DNA and genotyping PCR.
  • Execution of experiments: biochemical extraction of proteins from cell cultures and tissues, pulldowns and Western blot analysis, cell culture.
  • Managing, growing and differentiating cell lines and cultures.
  • Execution of Standard lab equipment experiments: immunofluorescence analysis and fluorescence, in situ hybridization.
  • Behavioral testing of mice in alcohol use disorder.


Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in one of the sciences, or equivalent combination (four (4) years) of job-related experience and college education. Experience may be substituted for college education on a year for year basis.
