Water Rate Taker

Department of Water Management

Meter Services

Number of Positions: 6

(Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval)

Starting Salary: $ $68,676.00 per year

This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City's collective Bargaining Agreement with THE CHICAGO JOURNEYMAN PLUMBERS UNION 130 (BARGAINING UNIT #16). Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

Under supervision, perform a range of clerical, timekeeping and customer service duties to support an organization's (e.g. district or central office, bureau) work operations, and perform related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES




  • Drives vehicles to various work locations throughout the City
  • Uses City vehicles to collect meter readings
  • Have ability to learn how to use handheld meter reading equipment
  • Routinely works in the field no matter the weather, including inclement weather
  • Contacts owners, residents, or property managers of homes or properties to inform them of meter reading activities taking place in their area.
  • Travels to work Locations
  • Schedules appointments to arrange access to meters located indoors or behind locked fences
  • Must have strong customer service skills and ability to deal with difficult customers
  • When requested, will extract historical water consumption and present those reports to customers
  • May need to access basements, crawlspaces, and closets with many being challenging environments
  • Inspects for illegal connections and checks water meters for proper registration
  • Lifts heavy manhole covers, doors, and vault lids as needed to access the water meters
  • Responds to consumer inquiries and complaints
  • Documents investigations of malfunctioning meters and customer complaints
  • Inspects premises for illegal connections and checks water meters for proper registration
  • Maintains inspection records and prepares work activity reports
  • Basic knowledge of City streets and ability to understand geographical directions
  • Routine use of computers including desktops, laptops, tablets, and smart phones.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training, and Experience

* One year of utility meter reading work experience or one year of customer service experience.

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, OR OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

* A valid State of Illinois driver's license is required

* Must have the permanent use of an automobile that is properly insured, including a clause

specifically insuring the City of Chicago from accident liability

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position does not require a test or interview. Applicants who successfully apply for the position, meet the minimum qualifications, and possess the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be hired in a lottery/random order. Qualified bidders will be hired in seniority order according to the collective bargaining agreement.

Staff will follow any and all required Employment/Hiring Plan provisions, federal, state and local laws, and Collective Bargaining Agreements when applicable.
