Engineering Manager

Whippany Actuation Systems is seeking a hands-on Engineering Manager for our Flight Control Business Unit. In this role you coordinate with the Business Unit Manager to set, actively manage, and ultimately deliver on all engineering aspects of the Business Unit product strategy. You will ensure that all technical undertakings are driving value: either by increasing value driven pricing, reducing costs, and/or winning profitable new business.

In this role, you would typically:

  • Manages the BU's engineering team members at all technical levels within the organization, including: Sustaining, New Product Introduction (NPI), and new business pursuits.
  • Assists in the development of and supports BU strategy and BU Team objectives.
  • Recruits, manages, motivates and develops staff in assigned area to ensure individual and team effectiveness.
  • Supports and fosters the growth and professional development of all direct reports and team members.
  • Implements initiatives to continuously improve the responsiveness of the team to customer/business needs.
  • Ensures effective upward and downward communication so that important information is disseminated.
  • Holds self and team responsible for meeting customer schedules, deadlines and commitments, as well as cost targets.
  • Actively engages Customers to enhance BU reputation and build key customer relationships, improving customer appreciation for Whippany's capabilities/value.
  • Serves as key technical contact for the BU. Owns all BU engineering decisions and solicits appropriate feedback/buy-in from company experts as required.



We require:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent field from an accredited university or college
  • Five years' experience in engineering development.
  • Three years' leadership experience in an engineering role.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 15%
  • Authorization to work in the U.S.



Eligibility Requirements:

This role is restricted to U.S. persons (i.e., U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and other protected individuals under the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) due to access to export-controlled technology. Whippany Actuation Systems will require proof of status before employment.



Desired Characteristics:

  • Master's degree in electrical, mechanical, aerospace, or systems engineering.
  • 10 yrs. experience in electronic and electromechanical based new product development.
  • Exhibits leadership qualities, self-motivates and demonstrates a can-do attitude.
  • Leads by example while exhibiting enthusiasm and encouraging a sense of urgency.
  • Bias for action. Ability to recognize problems and opportunities. Ability to drive problem resolution and follow through to completion.
  • Results-oriented. Drives to achieve both short and long term goals.
  • Customer focused. Driven to meet the needs of both internal and external customers.
  • Innovative/Creative- drives to develop proprietary, product-differentiating technologies.
  • Familiarity with aerospace grade electronic circuit card design, materials, processes, mechanical design and environmental sealing.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and technical writing skills.
  • Proficiency in DOORS and MS Office products including Outlook, Excel and Project.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with the various aerospace, industry, government and international specifications and manufacturing practices.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with all levels of employees/customers and work in a fast paced, team environment.
  • Ability to handle and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
