Job Summary:

The Physical Sciences Laboratory (PSL) is a research and development organization within the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research.

PSL develops unique instrumentation solutions used in scientific research programs all over the world. Our expertise spans the entire engineering process from initial conceptual design, through engineering development, fabrication, testing, and on-site installation. We have experience with projects at every scale and level of complexity.

Working from blueprints, sketches and verbal instructions, this position is responsible for producing highly precise and unique parts and assemblies used in extremely accurate scientific apparatus. This involves (1) utilizing advanced knowledge, skills and experiences necessary for welding, machining and assembling complex equipment, (2) collaborating with engineering and scientific staff concerning joint designs and welding processes, (3) designing and fabricating specialized jigs and fixtures necessary to perform unique welding operations, and (4) modifying apparatus as required.


Responsibilities:
Performs as a highly skilled machinist in the design, creation, and/or modification of unique, highly intricate, and precise scientific equipment, industrial equipment, and mechanical systems. Maintains and modifies standard laboratory and specialized research equipment or instrumentation to be used in laboratory and other research environments.

  • 50% Designs, develops, fabricates, tests, and maintains highly specialized instruments, components, and mechanical systems
  • 5% Analyzes data and recommends protocol changes to assure quality and alignment with the strategic plan and unit objectives
  • 5% Assists with the selection of materials and components with respect to physical properties, cost, and established guidelines
  • 10% Maintains, repairs, and operates highly complex and/or specialized instrumentation, identifies damages and communicates repair or replacement needs to the appropriate entities
  • 5% Locates, positions, and calibrates instrument parts and assemblies
  • 5% Trains staff and stakeholders on processes and procedures
  • 20% Weld specialized instruments, using varying welding processes and techniques, adhering to AWS/ASME code or to other specified requirements.

Qualifications:

Required:
(1) Extensive knowledge and skill in carrying out welding operations such as TIG, MIG, GTAW, Manual Shielded Arc Welding, brazing and soldering, and Plasma/Carbon Arc/flame cutting.
(2) Complete mechanical aptitude and knowledge of mechanical technology and tools.
(3) Working knowledge of typical materials used in Instrument Making. Example materials include austenitic and martensitic stainless steel (300 and 400 series), aluminum, copper, Nitronic 60, titanium, tungsten, molybdenum and macor ceramic.
(4) Experience with reading and interpreting blueprints and schematics.

Preferred:
(1) Technical Degree- Welding
(2) Welding Certifications AWS D1.6/1.6M, and ASME B31.3.
(3) Knowledge, skill and ability to perform ultra high vacuum welding.
(4) Knowledge, training, and skill with machine tools common to an instrument or prototype shop. Including but not limited to; lathes and milling machines, surface, cylindrical, and tool/cutter grinders, horizontal boring bars, cutting equipment, and various sheet metal equipment.
(5) Knowledge and skill with materials and machining techniques required to achieve tolerance and finish specifications commonly required in prototype or instrument development projects.
(6) Working knowledge of precision measuring instruments (i.e. micrometers, calipers, optical comparators).
(7) Ability to work effectively with others.
(8) Ability to keep workspace area clean, organized and uncluttered.


License/Certification:

Required
Forklift Operator Certification
Training and certification can be provided if needed.

Monday through Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.
