Director of Nursing- Behavioral Health

Horizon Health is seeking an Assistant Nurse manager for the unit at Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery, AL. This is a 54 bed adult inpatient psych unit. The Director of Nursing plans, implements, and evaluates and assures delivery of quality overall patient care by coordinating, managing, and supervising all nursing personnel and support staff of the behavioral health unit. This position provides managerial support to the program director by providing supervision and evaluation of all nursing personnel on the unit. This position also contributes to the program, nursing, and hospital through commitment to nursing goals, the supervision of clinical staff, and providing clinical training. Responsibilities encompass reviewing and assessing each service, completing employee performance evaluations, completing program chart reviews, or ensuring chart reviews are completed by a member of the clinical or quality staff, and quality assurance projects. Involvement with budgetary and fiscal planning, interviewing potential staff, as well as involvement with the Program's new employee orientation program. The DON shall direct all patient care services provided by the program.

Responsibilities:

  • Promote patient health by supervising the nursing process.
  • Performs as the director of professional nursing activities maintaining accountability for the 24 hour administration of the nursing services.
  • Provides nursing consultation and acts as a resource person in providing individual care to patients.
  • Defines the philosophy, goals, and objectives of the treatment program, under the direction of hospital administration and in conjunction with the medical director and program director.
  • Collaborates with physicians, multidisciplinary team members, and outside health and social agencies.
  • Ensures the completion of all required documentation relevant to patients in a timely, efficient manner.
  • Ensures that all nursing documentation is accurate, reflects the patients' conditions and progress, medications, and treatment adheres to the policies and procedures, legal requirements, and regulatory standards.
  • Receives information of emergency and patient care situations, and investigates and resolves any issues though the appropriate channels.
  • Develops and assures implementation of nursing care standards, policies, and procedures in accordance with the Nurse's Practice Act.
  • Works with the program director and hospital in budget formulation and staffing guidelines to ensure adequate provision of professional nursing services to meet patient needs.
  • Reviews and analyzes Hospital Occurrence Reports and employee injury reports to identify trends and patterns and provide recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Assist program director in reviewing, analyzing, and acting upon written or non-written patient/ family grievances or complaints concerning quality care needs of the program through identifying changing patient needs in the areas of nursing skill, equipment, supplies, and pertinent historical data pertaining to census and patient classification.
  • Participates in a 24-hour call process to handle emergency situations.
  • Monitor nursing personnel performance on a continuous basis and conduct regular performance evaluations for clinical direct reports.
  • Interpret the nursing and treatment needs of the patients to non-clinical staff assigned to the patient and provide support when needed.
  • Provide feedback to supervisor on an ongoing basis regarding concerns, improvements, changes, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree highly preferred, bachelor's degree required.
  • Active AL or multistate RN license required.
  • CPR, BLS, ACLS certification
  • 3-5 years of working experience in the behavioral health field, in leadership
