What You'll Do

The Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic installs, troubleshoots, repairs, performs routine and preventive maintenance of, and overhauls industrial, commercial, and domestic refrigeration and air conditioning equipment, including all auxiliary equipment, controls and related accessories. Performs soldering and brazing task as encountered in refrigeration work.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent and six years of experience in the installation, troubleshooting, repair, operation, and general maintenance of industrial, commercial, and domestic refrigeration and Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment and systems or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A(i.e., High School diploma; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative).DOE 426.2A experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities. (Ref. DOE O 426.2A)
  • A Type 1, 2, 3 or universal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification is required
  • Ability to read and work from blueprints, schematics, manufacturers technical publications, and procedures is required
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment including respirators
  • Must satisfactorily complete all training requirements
  • Relevant experience must be within the last five years
  • This position may require participation in the Beryllium program

Preferred Job Requirements

  • At least 5 years maintenance and repair experience in the following:

    • Centrifugal chiller maintenance and repair including:

      • Low pressure, High Pressure and Industrial screw chillers
      • Primary/secondary chilled water distribution systems, cooling tower maintenance and repair
      • Whole building HVAC distribution systems




  • Pneumatic controls
  • Variable Air Volume (VAV) air distribution systems, DDC control for HVAC; and/or
  • Variable frequency drives for fans, pumps and motors

Notes

The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy clearance is required. Position may require entry into Materials Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). If HRP is required, candidate must complete a counterintelligence-scope polygraph, pursuant to 10 CFR 709. This position may require participation in the Beryllium program.
