Overview

The program will provide an opportunity for direct patient care, development of interdisciplinary communication and collaboration skills, and increased clinical competency. Student Nurse Interns will work side by side with a highly skilled, experienced nurse preceptor. The program will foster confidence in the student nurse interns and serve as a valuable transition to practice in understanding the professional nursing role.

Student Nurse Interns will receive a comprehensive orientation. The program offers an educational experience intended to optimize nursing knowledge, with an emphasis on the provision of safe and quality care, integrating concepts of patient and family centered care, and communication with the multidisciplinary health care team. In addition to learning opportunities on the unit, such as Regular meetings with educators, nurse managers, and team members , and the opportunity to attend the various in-services and education programs offered at YNHH - Greenwich Hospital


Qualifications

1. Demonstrates basic skill in observing, assessing and communicating patient needs.
Identifies changes in patient's condition and reports pertinent and concise information to members of the
healthcare team in conjunction with RN mentor.
2. Demonstrates basic skill in planning and providing direct patient care.
3. Completes non-therapeutic functions as directed.
4. Demonstrates accountability and responsibility in performance of role.
5. Demonstrates development in professoinal growth through daily activities.
6. Performs decentralized laboratory testing as credentialed and following established policies and procedures

Student Nurse Intern Program Summer 2025

The Greenwich Hospital Summer Student Nurse Intern Program is a paid mentorship designed for BSN and ADN student nurses who are currently enrolled in an accredited School of Nursing and graduate December 2025/January 2025 or Summer 2026.

Dates of Program: 5/27/2025 to 7/25/2024

Locations: Greenwich Hospital

Hours per week: 24 hrs/week, day shift, some weekends

(no off-shifts/holidays/overtime)

Rate: $16.35/hour

Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited BSN School of Nursing entering senior year or entering their second year of an accredited Associate Degree (ADN) in Nursing program.

  • Successful completion of at least 1 clinical rotation and Fundamentals of Nursing prior to start of program
  • Able to provide proof of current BLS Certification
  • Must commit to work 24 hours/week every week for the duration of the program - you must be available to start on 5/27/2025

No matter what specialty you might be interested in pursuing as a new graduate RN, this internship program will give you a solid knowledge and skills base for wherever you start your career after you graduate.

  • Include top 3 specialty choices - every effort will be made to assign the Intern to one of their choices but it will depend on the participating patient care units

Position Overview

The Student Nurse Intern (SNI) is defined as a Junior nursing student who is beginning their senior year of an accredited BSN School/Dept of Nursing or beginning their second year of an accredited Associate Degree (ADN) in Nursing program.

The student nurse has successfully completed their school's Fundamental Nursing Skills Laboratory and is currently enrolled in or has completed at least one semester of relevant Clinical practicum in their School/Department of Nursing Program.

Under the direction of the Registered Nurse the Student Nurse Intern will perform unlicensed clinical skills and provide environmental support to the unit.

Students will NOT prepare or administer any medications, prepare, initiate or administer any IV or arterial therapy, prepare or administer blood or blood components, or accept physician or LIP orders.

Students will work with RN preceptor/mentor on all designated activities.

Patient and family centered care (PFCC) at YNHHS is demonstrated by working with patients and their families based on the 4 principles of PFCC: participation, dignity and respect, information sharing, and collaboration.

This includes providing service excellence by creating a great "First Impression" by demonstrating exemplary customer service skills for all customer groups including patients, families/friends, physicians, staff and support department personnel.
