We are seeking an outstanding Senior Mechanical Engineer to join the Manufacturing Systems Engineering (MSE) team at 10x Genomics on a temporary contract. This is a key position for the commercialization of consumable products within the Global Operations Engineering team. This multi-disciplinary position involves close collaboration with various groups including Microfluidics, Supply Chain Management, and New Product Development. You will play a key role in transferring non reagent consumable to volume manufacturing. This role partners with the Operations, NPI, Customer Support, and R&D teams to improve robustness and efficiencies across multiple product lines. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in supporting consumable used in on-market equipment for the life science or medical device industry. They should possess a broad understanding of the design and manufacturing of complex consumable systems and excel in solving complex problems. As a member of the team, you will be instrumental in supporting 10x manufacturing, supply chain, and service & support teams to deliver products that enable accelerated understanding of biology. What you will be doing:
- Act as a technical lead for the release to volume manufacturing of complex plastic consumables or packaging
- Collect and document requirements for new consumable from different stakeholders
- Systematically evaluate and compare multiple options to inform and justify decisions.
- Perform Design for Manufacturability analysis on consumable
- Qualify new consumables with suppliers
- Lead the transfer of new parts to suppliers
- Organize and manage projects to improve costs and product yield
- Utilize Arena PLM and Oracle ERP systems
- Conduct occasional supplier visits
- Ensure close collaboration with microfluidics, process development and new product development teams
Minimum Requirements:
- BS in Mechanical, Plastics, Packaging or Manufacturing Engineering
- At least 5+ years of post-graduate, industrial experience
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, including the ability to attend meetings and effectively communicate ideas and progress
- Solid 3D mechanical design experience using CAD (SolidWorks a plus)
- Experience with injection molding, co-molding, thermoforming, etc.
- Strong understanding of geometric tolerancing, dimensional stack-ups, and metrology
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Strong cross collaboration skills and experience with vendor management
- Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 25 lbs.
- Ability to perform physical activities such as bending, lifting, reaching and standing for extended periods.
- Must be able to work in various environments, including office, lab, clean rooms and manufacturing settings.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required to maintain safety in manufacturing and lab areas.
- Operate hand tools and machinery safely and efficiently.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Experience with plastics consumables, including DfM/DfX, formulations, and testing
- Familiarity with statistical data analysis tools and design of experiments
- Direct experience with plastics injection molding process optimization and qualification
- Familiarity with laboratory and clean room environments
- Familiarity with liquid silicone rubber (LSR), polymers, and material properties
- Ability to travel 15% of working time away from work location, may include overnight/weekend travel
