Department Summary

The College of Health and Public Service (HPS) at the University of North Texas, distinguished as one of the few Tier One research universities designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), prepares graduates to address complex social issues such as aging, disability, disaster management and recovery, criminal justice, health disparities, and public safety, and find solutions to challenges in public administration, public health, and urban planning. We have seven academic departments with undergraduate and graduate programs, the Center for Public Management, the UNT Speech and Hearing Center, UNT Workplace Inclusion & Sustainable Employment (WISE) and a number of professional development and clinical training programs to facilitate careers to address a global society.

HPS students are trained to lead nonprofits, become educators, researchers and professionals who strengthen the diverse communities we serve with thoughtful, inclusive and equitable practices as audiologists, behavior analysts, city managers, emergency managers, health care administrators, public safety administrators, public health specialists, rehabilitation counselors, speech language pathologists, social workers, urban planners and more.

Located within HPS, the Department of Social Work houses both MSW and BSW degree programs. We develop generalist social work practitioners who will advance equity and optimize quality-of-life outcomes in diverse communities worldwide by helping people overcome the challenges associated with abuse, poverty, homelessness, addiction, disability, illness and discrimination. Graduates practice in a variety of areas including integrated healthcare settings, hospice, substance abuse treatment, mental health, child welfare, aging, criminal justice, veterans, military, first responders, and more.

Position Overview

The Social Work Senior Administrative Specialist provides support to the academic department and Chair, acting as a liaison with the College of Health & Public Service and UNT-wide offices.

Responsibilities include providing a wide variety of administrative support to the Chair and faculty. This includes coordinating class scheduling and textbook adoptions, facilitating program communications for the degrees, and coordinating student employment requests.

Additionally, the role involves managing departmental tasks related to admissions and registration, maintaining departmental and student records, and executing correspondence and calendar maintenance. The specialist also handles requests for purchasing, payroll, and other financial support from the college while managing other general logistical and administrative needs for the department.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and three years' of highly responsible and varied office administration or business management experience; or any equivalent combination of experience, education, and training

Job Duties:



  • Acts as first point of contact in customer-oriented services. Provides accurate information about degree programs.
  • Oversees student workers, including hiring, training, and supervision of daily activities.
  • Manages departmental application and registration processes for students.
  • Provides primary administrative support for academic functions of the department, class scheduling documentation as directed by the Chair, ordering textbooks & timely delivery of materials to faculty, providing administrative support to adjuncts, and other tasks associated with maintaining the department academic schedule.
  • Prepares meeting documents, correspondence, reports, and other documents as assigned.
  • Assists faculty and staff with requests for travel authorization and submission of reimbursement documentation.
  • Gathers departmental information relevant to and submits requests for purchasing, payroll, and budgetary functions from the HPS Finance team.
  • Manages general office functions such as room scheduling, calendars management, meeting scheduling, copying, special events, providing direction to faculty about appropriate administrative procedures, and other logistical needs.
  • Maintains departmental student records, updating files and information as it changes.
  • Acts as a Pcard holder, making routine purchases for departmental needs in compliance with UNT policies, as approved by the HPS Finance team.
