The Office of Graduate Student Services within the College of Education & Human Development actively audits graduate students for degree completion and performs advanced-level academic advisement functions such as assisting assigned faculty advisors with the advisement of graduate students and providing proper implementation of university policies and procedures. In addition, the Office of Graduate Student Services processes graduate applications for the college, ensuring that applicants meet the minimum admission criteria established.

The Office of Graduate Student Services at Georgia State University is seeking to hire an Academic Advisor II.

WHAT WILL YOU DO:

This position is responsible for assisting newly admitted graduate students with customer relationship questions and networking new students with appropriate points of contact in financial aid, academic advisement (with assigned faculty), registration, and orientation processes.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:



  • Review an established population of graduate applications for the college to ensure applicants meet the minimum established graduate admission criteria.
  • Attach admission decisions made by the program faculty and college leadership to graduate applications and notify applicants of decisions.
  • Create TPMS records for the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) for graduate students accepted to a teacher prep program.
  • Monitor graduate program enrollment and assist program faculty and department with recruitment efforts.
  • Assist both graduate students and faculty with navigating academic policies and procedures.
  • Work closely with faculty advisors on graduate degree requirements to include petitions or course substitutions where applicable.
  • Review completed graduate transfer credits and enter credits into banner to be reflected on a graduate student's record when approved.
  • Assist with offering graduate workshops each semester to assist with academic and non-academic needs.
  • Refer graduate students to applicable resources on campus when needed.
  • Recommend graduate students for certification (when applicable).
  • Evaluate graduate students for graduation clearance.

Qualifications :

Minimum Requirements:



  • Bachelor's degree and either:

    • A) 6 months experience as "Academic Advisor I" at GSU (University Advisement Center or other GSU advising department), or
    • B) 3 years of related experience; or a combination of education and related experience.




Preferred Requirements:



  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Confidence with presenting either in-person or online
  • Institutional knowledge of university policies
  • Proficient computer skills with banner, slate (common graduate application), and degree works knowledge
