Position Purpose |
To participate as a team member in research investigations in the area of prion biology to develop cell culture, animal, and biochemical models of neurodegeneration. To set up and conduct a variety of laboratory tests and experiments by applying both established and novel methods, procedures and techniques. |

* Bachelor's degree with a major in Chemistry, Biology, or Molecular Biology.
* 2-3 years of relevant laboratory/ research experience with biochemistry, mammalian cell culture, and molecular biology techniques
* Understanding of Molecular and Cellular Biology
* Ability to learn and perform scientific techniques carefully and precisely
* Organizational and time management skills
* Good mathematical and quantitative skills
* Ability to work independently and apply critical thinking and sound judgment.
* Good organizational and time management skills.
* Competence with general laboratory methods and scientific instruments
* Knowledge of standard computer software packages for data analysis and presentation, and on-line literature search engines.
* Willingness to learn and use proper containment protocols for working with biological and chemical hazards.
* Willingness to work with animals.
* Feels comfortable asking scientific and technical questions. |

Experiments
* Independently sets up and conducts experiments by applying established procedures with general guidance from the principal investigator and other senior lab members.
* Observes experimental results in progress and helps to identify and troubleshoot problems.
* Reports experimental results to the principal investigator and other senior lab members and assists in their analysis .
* Collaborates with the principal investigator in investigating and developing modifications to techniques and documents all new techniques developed in the laboratory.
* Performs experiments using appropriate P2 biohazard precautions and adheres to all laboratory safety requirements. |

* Summarizes results and prepares progress reports for oral presentation at laboratory meetings.

* Contributes to the preparation of scientific manuscripts by drafting portions of the text, preparing graphs, tables, and charts, etc.
* Conducts literature searches to assist in establishing new laboratory techniques
