The Position

The Opportunity

Overview: The Issue Advocacy team is responsible for education, activation, and advocacy with third party stakeholders in Washington, D.C., state capitals and local districts. Prioritization of legislative, policy, and advocacy goals is based on key business priorities and conducted in conjunction with business leaders throughout company departments and functions.

Job Scope: The Senior Director is responsible for managing federal issues and building a proactive engagement plan around Genentech's short- and long-term advocacy priorities in Washington. The individual will be responsible for implementing an outreach strategy with third party stakeholders including but not limited to patient and provider organizations, legislative and policy coalitions, consumer, health equity and special interest organizations, think tanks and trade associations. The role will showcase the company as a science-driven and patient focused business whose priority is to shape the policy landscape through credible engagement. The Senior Director will monitor and analyze engagement, trends and activities in Washington and will be responsible for communicating and incorporating the third party perspective to business leaders through participation on key internal projects and working groups. The Senior Director works alongside other advocacy colleagues, including the FGA and policy teams, sits on the Issue Advocacy leadership team, represents the department at a variety of engagements and meetings, and is responsible for communicating to key external and internal stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for cultivating and coordinating Genentech's engagements and relationships with key external stakeholders, including patient and provider organizations, community organizations, health care industry associations and other third party stakeholders and influencers on priority issues. Distinguish the company as a leader in healthcare while proactively advancing company objectives.

  • Develop external environment shaping strategies that will address both near-term business needs and threats as well as a longer-term view designed to position Genentech as the leader in shaping a market-based environment that meets the future needs of the company, the healthcare system, and patients.

  • Manages and develops other members of the team while serving on the Issue Advocacy leadership team.

  • Drive advocacy campaign execution, harnessing the impact of local engagement and incorporating policy research, coalition development, lobbying, stakeholder activation and public affairs activities to achieve desired outcome.

  • Elevates Genentech as a thought leader and solutions driver through proactive participation at key engagements, programming, and other activities.

  • Cultivates unified philosophy through work with others External Affairs in pursuit of overarching objectives.

Who you are

Required Qualifications:

  • You have a Bachelors degree

  • You have 10+ years of experience leading and managing advocacy and public policy work in a corporate, association and or Capitol Hill/Administration setting.

  • Should possess a deep understanding of healthcare policy and issues impacting the biopharmaceutical industry.

  • Strong relationships with key third party stakeholders required

  • Organizational leadership and management experience, the ability to motivate others to advance goals, and the ability to effectively manage multiple projects or roles in a rapidly evolving environment. Demonstrated skills in leading consensus-building processes.

  • Demonstrated experience in core healthcare issues and other related expertise in issues of critical importance to company and its business.

  • Experience working with a variety of stakeholders, including trade associations and coalitions, and ability to proactively drive objectives by effectively bringing individuals together.

  • The candidate must be able to utilize strong oral and written skills in order to communicate targeted messages to a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders.

  • The candidate must possess an ability to set clear objectives and effectively implement comprehensive government affairs strategies that include advocacy, coalition building, messaging, material generation and other means necessary in order to meet defined goals.

  • The candidate must be a motivated individual who can provide strategic direction while working collaboratively as part of an External Affairs team.

This position is based out of our Washington DC Genentech Campus (onsite presence required)

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Washington DC is $182,800/yr to $339,400/yr. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
