Position description

The Center for the Built Environment (CBE) at the University of California, Berkeley, is seeking an Assistant Professional Researcher to lead research on indoor air quality, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, building performance simulations, occupancy detection, and plug load management. This team member will work in collaboration with leading research and advocacy organizations to advance knowledge in this field. This research will also be done in partnership with CBE's consortium of 50 partner organizations, a diverse group of industry leaders that represent the breadth of the building sector. The Professional Research series is for career academic appointees who focus on independent and creative research activity of high quality at the equivalent to that expected of the Professor series.

The successful candidate's main duties and responsibilities will consist of:

(1) Participating in and leading research projects in building science that include indoor air quality, laboratory experiments, field studies on the physical indoor environmental quality aspects, HVAC, and other aspects of building performance.

(2) Developing research capabilities and directions for the indoor air quality assessment team at CBE; identifying trends in research and helping to develop the corresponding team capabilities required to take on the associated research challenges.

(3) Identifying funding opportunities at government agencies, industry and philanthropic organizations; leading proposals to apply to those opportunities.

(4) Overseeing simulation or experimental design and set-up, including data acquisition systems, calibration, physical measurements, human and building performance assessments, and simulation methods.

(5) Supervising and conducting experiments in laboratory settings, field studies, or simulation contexts.

(6) Overseeing and conducting comprehensive data analysis, including both qualitative and quantitative data, and design tool development.

(7) Writing technical documents and presenting research results, as well as preparing project reports for funding agencies and/or industry partners.

(8) Writing articles for refereed academic journals, industry publications, and/or conferences.

(9) Managing research project budgets.

(10) Supervising and training graduate students and other team members working on research projects.

(11) Participating in standards and code development and with professional associations, for example, ISIAQ, ASHRAE or IBPSA.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Ph.D. or equivalent International Degree

Preferred qualifications

  • Ph.D or equivalent International Degree in Architecture or Engineering or related fields.
  • Record of high quality publications in academic journals and other publication venues.
  • Demonstrated expertise in indoor air quality
  • Experience with data analysis (using R, Python or equivalent).
  • At least 5 years of experience designing and conducting research and statistical analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain funding to pursue their research interests and goals, or at least demonstrated proposal writing skills
  • Previous graduate study, academic, industrial training or other professional experience in the building sciences or closely related fields.
  • Experience in a range of research methods (e.g., lab studies, field studies, simulations, human subject experiments, equipment testing).
  • End-to-end experience with all aspects of research - identification of and planning for funding opportunities, forming competitive teams and concepts for funding applications, writing proposals, research design, data acquisition, occupant surveys, analysis, reporting, stakeholder communication.
  • Research experience in indoor air quality, HVAC systems, IEQ and building performance studies, or comparable experience in a similar field.
  • Expertise in software and/or hardware development for building science applications.
  • Experience in air quality measurements (e.g., CO2, airflow, particles, NOx, VOCs, portable air cleaners, )
  • Experience with thermal comfort measurements (e.g., air speed, human subject tests, etc)
  • Experience with infectious aerosol measurements and mitigations strategies
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team, including the ability to efficiently and actively cooperate with other staff members within the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a research team of graduate students and visiting scholars
  • Strong English writing and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated expertise with visualization
