JOB DUTIES
- Responsible for the prompt, accurate, and efficient screening of gynecological and non-gynecological specimens and reporting the diagnostic results.
- Microscopically examines gynecological and non-gynecological specimens including FNAs. Properly identifies and classifies all abnormal, precancerous, and cancerous changes.
- Identifies infectious agents including viral changes, fungal and other parasitic organisms.
- Identifies endocervical components when present; recognizes abnormal cell changes associated with radiation and chemotherapy changes. Enters results into LIS and verifies for report release.
- Assures specimen labeling requirements are met and all necessary clinical information is available. Answers inquiries regarding test results, methodology, and specific factors that can influence test results.
- Assists with or performs accessioning, processing, and staining of specimens in accordance with the cytology processing manual with only supervisor/pathologist-approved modifications or deviations.
- Assists clinicians within the hospital for the procurement of material from fine needle aspirations.
- Participates in quality control procedures and documents accordingly; participates in proficiency testing.
- Assists laboratory assistants; participates in the training and orientation of new employees, as required and assigned. Writes and/or updates standard operating procedures as assigned.
- Keeps work area physically clean, organized and free of safety hazards; properly disposes of all biohazardous materials and chemically hazardous materials; maintains adequate inventory to complete work, and orders supplies as needed.
- Participates in process improvement activities and prepares routine Quality Assurance Indicator reports in a timely manner.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
