About the Job

The University of Minnesota seeks a Senior Tax Accountant to contribute to the mission of the Tax Management Office (TMO), a University-wide division overseeing the tax functions on all five campuses. The Senior Tax Accountant assists in providing tax compliance to the varied University communities in critical tax areas such as unrelated business income, tax-exempt debt, employee taxable fringe benefits, scholarships and fellowships, tax information reporting, sales and excise taxes, and other tax issues arising in higher education settings.
Ideal candidates will have experience working with tax-exempt organizations including higher education.

Hybrid Work Environment - This position has required in office work on the East Bank on the Minneapolis Campus.

Essential Duties and responsibilities with % time*:

Tax Compliance (80%):

  • Ensure that the University remains compliant with tax requirements.
  • Prepare and monitor various federal and state income, sales, and excise tax returns and forms for the University.
  • Prepare, file, amend or monitor various related-entity, federal, and state tax returns and forms.
  • Support post-issuance debt compliance for University-issued debt and state-issued debt.
  • Assist with compliance reviews of the University's Accountable Plan.
  • Support other tax compliance projects.

Tax Advising (10%):

  • Contribute in researching tax issues, gathering facts, and analyzing the tax risk. Work with TMO staff to help identify recommendations.
  • Collaborate with TMO staff when working with departments across all campuses as they look to engage in new activities to ensure that they comply with federal and state tax rules and regulations.
  • Support TMO staff on projects pertaining to multi-state tax compliance.

Training & Education (10%):

  • Support TMO in educating the University community regarding tax positions and requirements, including help with presentations to address tax issues specific to departments.
  • Contribute to the development of Tax Management Office Guidelines (TMOGs) that provide guidance about tax topics that require technical explanations for a wider audience.

*Percentages are estimates, depending on qualifications and needs of the TMO.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications (please document on resume):

  • BA/BS plus at least four years of professional work experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal eight years.
  • Tax compliance experience.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational skills; ability to manage multiple responsibilities at one time.
  • Ability to take initiative/work independently, with good judgment about seeking direction.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications (please document on resume):

  • BA/BS degree in accounting, finance, or related discipline.
  • CPA certification.
  • Experience performing tax work in higher education, government or nonprofit settings.
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $80,000 - $93,000; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 75%-100% Appointment
