Overview

The Environmental Project Manager I is responsible for managing and executing environmental projects with an emphasis on field activities, project coordination, environmental data collection and analysis, and the use of GIS for project planning and reporting. This position can be based in Honolulu, Hawaii, Denver, Colorado, or Arlington, Virginia. The position ensures that projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable regulations and quality standards. This role supports the full lifecycle of environmental projects, from planning to close-out, with leadership in fieldwork and subcontractor oversight.

    Perform a variety of duties involving the execution, management, coordination, monitoring and oversight of environmental projects.
  • Utilize GIS technologies to support environmental data visualization, spatial analysis, mapping, and reporting. Contribute GIS expertise across a broad range of environmental Manage the development, implementation, and maintenance of GIS systems and spatial databases in support of environmental service line operations and deliverables.
  • Ensure the accuracy, consistency, and quality of GIS data across multiple projects, in compliance with federal contract requirements and industry standards.
  • Maintain and update geospatial databases, ensuring proper version control, metadata documentation, and integration of field-collected data using GPS and mobile applications.
  • Coordinate with project managers, scientists, and engineers to produce high-quality maps, spatial analyses, and visualizations that support investigations, remediation, and reporting efforts.
  • Develop and document standardized GIS workflows, templates, and procedures that align with regulatory expectations and contract deliverables.
  • Provide technical support and mentorship to junior staff assisting with GIS tasks, promoting knowledge sharing and skill development across the team.
  • Stay current with emerging GIS tools and technologies to recommend and implement process improvements that enhance operational efficiency and data quality.
  • Support data requests and audits from clients and regulators by ensuring timely and well-documented GIS deliverables for contract compliance.
  • Conduct project and contract management of environmental projects, including managing resources (personnel, equipment, and subcontractors), complying with scopes of work, developing and managing project schedules, performing financial management such as preparing invoices, monthly/periodic status reports, and preparing cost estimates for environmental projects.
  • Plan, manage, and execute a variety of environmental projects, including the preparation of high-quality technical reports and provision of oversight to ensure field procedures are conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with project objectives and regulatory standards.
  • Support business development initiatives for the environmental business line.
  • Maintain and strengthen relationships with existing clients by ensuring high-quality project execution and responsiveness to client needs.
  • Manages client expectations and maintains routine communication with clients.
  • Travel to project sites 20-25% is required.
  • Work during the weekends and holidays may occasionally be required.


Qualifications

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Ability to professionally interact with managers, coworkers, field operations staff, technical staff, and subcontractors.
  • Capable of supporting development of or writing project work plans, health and safety plans, etc.
  • Self-motivated, able to function as part of a team, able to think critically.
  • The ideal candidate will have the capacity for leadership in field-based environmental work and project management.
  • They must possess strong communication and organizational skills to effectively manage teams, subcontractors, and client relationships.
  • Proficiency with GIS platforms such as ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online is essential for supporting data-driven decision-making and reporting across a range of environmental services.
  • A strong foundation (or willingness to learn) in environmental regulations such as CERCLA, RCRA, and NEPA is highly desired, along with technical expertise in sampling techniques, field equipment use, and the preparation of environmental work products.
  • The candidate must be capable of writing comprehensive reports and plans and be comfortable leading efforts that require interdisciplinary coordination.

Military Installation Access and Security Clearance: This position requires access to military installations. Must be able to qualify for and obtain a base access pass and currently hold or be able to obtain a Secret security clearance.

Education and Experience: A bachelor's degree in Geology, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related scientific or technical discipline is required. A minimum of three years of professional experience in environmental consulting, site investigation, or remediation project work is expected. Experience in field operations, subcontractor oversight, technical reporting, and the application of GIS in environmental projects is strongly preferred. Familiarity with federal environmental projects, particularly those involving military installations or munitions response, is advantageous.

Certifications: Candidates must possess, or be able to obtain, OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification with current refresher training. Professional certifications such as Registered or Professional Geologist (RG/PG), Engineer-in-Training (EIT), or Certified Environmental Professional (CEP) are highly desirable. Project management credentials, such as a PMP certification, are considered a plus and reflect a candidate's readiness to lead complex projects.

Physical Requirements: The ideal candidate must at a minimum be able to meet the following physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation:

  • Ability to perform repetitive motions with the hands, wrists, and fingers.
  • Ability to engage in and follow audible communications in emergency situations.
  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods at a desk and working on a computer.

The Nakupuna Companies use a market-based compensation strategy to ensure that our employees are compensated within applicable market ranges commensurate with multiple factors, including but not limited to the individual's particular combination of education, knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience, as well as contract-specific affordability, organizational requirements, and position location. The projected compensation range for this position is $72,000.00 to $90,000.00 (annualized USD). The salary range displayed represents the typical salary range for this position and is just one component of Nakupuna Companies total compensation package for employees.
